Easiest way to check valve spring retainer "wear"?
My Crower Ti valve spring RETAINERS have about 15K on them now, and I drive the car pretty hard, so Im starting to worry about them getting worn. Is there a way to check them for wear without taking them out? About how long can I expect Ti retainers to last? If I have to take them out to check them, do I need to remove the cams? It looks like I can access them without removing the cams but Im not sure. Muchas GrassyAss.

Hehe Damn! When't they come out with those?
But more to the point, I'd think you could get a fairly decent look at the retainers by just pulling the valve cover and carefully checking out the assembly (inspection mirror and flashlight might be needed).
No need to remove cams to even replace retainers (compressed air in the cylinder and a valve spring tool), though removing them for inspection is probably the only way to really gauge/measure their wear.

good idea with the mirror, it was hard to get a good angle to see the thickness so Ill give the mirror a try before trying to remove anything. </TD></TR></TABLE>
With that milage/age it might be a good idea to replace them anyway...treat them as a wear item...

would there be any drawbacks of putting my stock retainers back on? I know the Ti are stronger but wear down, and stock steel retainers can crack so Im not sure which would be best.

What would we be looking for? How thin is the retainer?

Thanks Steve, I know you have to LOOK at them. The problem lies in that they are DOWN inside the head and its hard to get a profile view of them to see how much they are worn, and be able to know if its time to change them or not.
