Default 90-93 Accord Ignition System

Could someone briefly outline the way this particular ignition system works? I know that 90-91 Accords have internal coils as opposed to 92-93 having external. If need be, specify the 90-91 point of view.

I just want to get an idea so I can troubleshoot a problem on a friend's 91 Accord LX 5-spd. His engine dies while it's in drive going down the road. He says it'll putter a bit before completely just shutting off, then coasting down the road. He doesn't have problems starting his car though, only while it's in drive mode going down the road.

He has replaced dist. cap & rotor, fuel pump, ignition switch wiring harness (long wire w/connector part), plug wires in good condition.

I'll keep you posted on what I find out. I'm thinking ECU, bad alternator or ignition coil...going to narrow it down by doing further testing.
