Default Help with valve cover( snapped one of the bolts)

one of the bolts for my valve cover broke at the threads when i was putting in a new grommet. I was wondering if it is safe to drive for a day with the other 4 in and the broken one in the hole just to plug it up.

thanx, reeder321

it was the one in the front in the middle. I was using the empty treaded hole in the top left of the valve cover to push the gromet over the bolt and i didn't realize i got it over the end of the threads and gave it one turn to many and SNAP!!! so I have to go to honda tommorow after work

yeah if its the same one as me, which it sounds like, then you should be fine, just find somthing that will plug up the hole to keep oil from splashing out when u drive and something that wont get sucked up in there also.

You'll be fine. I snapped the same one. Before I got the replacement bolt, I put that grommet thing on and then put hot glue over it. It held no problem.

I have a B16A, and the replacement is a stud with two threaded ends. I think the studs closer to the spark plugs are different than those towards the outside of the valve cover.

Make sure you buy extra while you're there. You might as well some of those chrome acorns too. And having some extra Honda-bond around the house won't hurt either..

Actually there was another tread on this topic about three weeks ago or so...and some guy posted about how he had been driving with that bolt broken for nearly a year.

I've broken 2 of my valve cover bolts on my sohc before. They are a bitch and have to be tightened with extra caution. I had to drill into the broken piece that was stuck down in the threads and use an ez out to get out. Its a pain in the ***. I usually just use a 1/4" drive with a 10mm socket now and grip the wrench towards the top to give myself less leverage so I don't overtighten.

the open threaded slot on the back lefthand side of my valve cover is plugged with a snapped bolt. is this a bad thing, does it serve any purpose or is it no big deal?

I've broken 2 on my gf's SOHC, and it doesn't leak... yet.. I took the valve cover off to see if there was enough sticking out to grab it with pliers, but they are about 4-5 mm below the top of the head. I tried an extractor with no luck

My friend did that **** to my car, didn't chance driving with it so we drove to a Honda that happen to have what we needed, and fixed it. I guess its been done before so I guess its safe.

If you use RTV, put the cover on first, and "caulk" the edge where the two peices join all the way around. You do not want RTV in your oil flowing through your engine parts..

Valve cover bolts are only supposed to be torqued to 7 lb-ft.

$8 from honda for a new one. Well, that was overnight shipping for me. But in the mean time RTV or hondabond the hole closed. You'll be fine.

i try and stay away from socket wrenches all together when putting the nuts back on...use a nut driver and you should have no problems with overtightening.
