May have blown a headgasket or maybe not? Has anyone had leaks due to the cam seals on the timing b
I have been noticing puddles of oil on my timing belt side since prior to going to the track. I changed the vakve cover gasket. Well I have noticed more lately, looked at behind the timing belt at the head and block and it is puddling up right there after running for a couple of minutes. I have no symptons of a blown headgsket, no overheating, no milky oil or coolant, no milky condensation in the oil cap. A friend says it may be the cam seals on teh timing belt side. Well we did just change the cams out to the ITR cams a couple months back, we used the old cam seals. I know when your cam seal and distibutor is leaking on the distributor side it looks like your head and block is leaking, how bout the timing belt side? I will fully check this out tomorrow BUT to set my mind at ease lemme know your experiences! Thansk H-T! I don;'t want to have to change my headgasket AGAIN, possibly the headstuds loosened up. I dunno! Lemme know experiences first guys!
change them seals out man.
. u reusing them and reving to 9500, this is where I would start. Cam seals

FALSE ALARM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN RIGHT! What I did is I CLEANED the block and head mating surface of all oil and anywhere else there REAL WELL!!! And then started the car took a light and watched that **** after a minute I could see the oil dripping from the top!!!!! Tomorrow I will be changing out the cam seals. WHEW! Close call!
I have had it happen a couple times. Just chage them out with new OEM seals...dont forget to lube the cam up a bit before you slide the seal onto it...also make sure the head and cam cap (where the seal seats) is clear of all debis before you torque everything down...

If you are having alot of problems with them, then you probably have excess crankcase pressure. Check your vent system, or you may have alot of blowby and it's causing pressure buildup in the crankcase.

I've always had problems reusing cam seals, I now put in new ones with every cam install. Even if I just take out the cams for something else.

I just have a little mini k&n filter on my crankcase vent......
The engine is freashly built, maybe 500 miles on it. I dunno if im getting blow by, its making some good power still......

I actually just took the cam caps off and cleaned them off and put Honda Bond on them, also made sure the cam seals were all the way in. I restarted the car and checked for leaks, looks good to go now. I did buy new ones anyways in case. I just didn't want to pull the cams and have to redo it all, I am lazy.
If you still have all the stock plastic there is a loop of plastic that goes around both cams right behind the gear. Its only function i can think of is to stop the leaking oil in that location from getting on the timing belt. I would say its a vulnerable area honda knew about when they built the engine. Dont reuse the seals unless they are aftermarket type. On those u can usually even replace the o-rings.
