they MIGHT use different size pistons in the same motor.... it sounds redickulous

It's not ridiculous, it is how they deal with differing tolerances during the manufacturing process. An "A" bore requires an "A" piston, a "B" bore (which will be slightly different in size than "A") requires a "B" piston.
