Default 5000rpm cut off problem

Well since the last oil change on my car (maybe a month or so) i've seen the performance droped A LOT;

the oil changed as been done by my father since I had no time to do this, he used 5w30 mineral penzoil.

so here's my problem:

When I hit hard on the pedal the engine won't go over 5000rpm, it seems like the engine is lacking of something. When i'm in first gear, their's almost no problem, sometime it do cutoff but someother time not. in second gear it happens more often and in 3rd, it's always a cut-off at 5000rpm. so i supposed the problem is related with engine load, maybe vtec engagement problem.

i've checked the ignition, looked good, but cleaned it up just in case, nothing changed, i've tried to clean the intake filter, but since I didn't had anything to clean it with, I just took the vacuum cleaner, maybe the filter is still blocked... the problem really began after the oil changed, that's for sure, maybe the oil is too thick and vtec is hardly engaging, before this time i've only put syntetic oil, but lack of $$.

my car is a 4cyl 2002 accord coupe, and over here we have winter with a lot of snow and cold temp. but it's beggining to get hotter, but no changes.

need help please, don't want to go at the dealer since I don't want to lose my car for a week for a small problem

What if you slowly press on the pedal, can you go over 5000 rpms?

at first glance i am thinking

blocked air filter... Try removing it for now and see

bad gas.... Sometime you can get bad gas at the pump. Has this symptom happened with a fresh tank of gas?

Catalytic converter is blocked up

just a thought here...

I can go over 5000rpm in first gear if i don't press to hard on the gas

i'll check on my way to my job if I remove the air filter, it's less then 2-3km

bad gas, don't think since it's for a month at different gas station

catalytic converter, it's a 2 years old car, so don't know how it can be blocked??

don't know what you want to know?

yes I have a cut-off alway on 3rd at 5000rpm, where it should be at 6750. don't know if it's from the fuel or the ignition

Now, just re-read your post. You say

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by JSMC &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Well since the last oil change on my car (maybe a month or so) i've seen the performance droped A LOT;

If it was fine before the oil change, and right after it started to do this, it could be related to something that was disconnected or hit by chance...

Retrace the steps your father took... Look around the engine, underneath the car... look for something he could of hit...

that's what i've thought, but never think it would be a good idea to check back

btw we can scratch the air filter, i've tried without it and still cut-off at 5000rpm

also look into your sparkwires, spark plugs, rotor, and cap make sure spark wires have no cracks in them.

What make, model year Accord do you have and when, if ever, was the catalytic converter last checked/replaced?

Bogging @ higher RPM can be a few different things. Fuel or Air supply issues, ignition problems and/or restrictive exhaust. Seems as though you have most of the ignition system replaced, how about the fuel filter & air filter? Ever done a fuel injection/fuel system cleaning? EGR system cleaning. Also change the PCV valve.

Hey guys, i'm new here. (posted this on another thread - this seems to be close and active)
I don't think its much off topic so here goes.

I have a d16y5 engine on an ek sedan which bogs at 5000 rpm. I've changed the fuel pump, filters (air, fuel and oil) new oil, plugs and distributor and yes no CEL codes.

all stock save for SRAM (recently cleaned element) intake and apexi muffler.

Out of frustration, tried to disconnect the vtec solenoid socket and tried it out. Surprisingly, it did reach the red line. (CEL was on)

I reconnected the solenoid, reset the ECU and again no codes.

I'm stumped.

BTW, i also changed: Engine temp sensor (the one below the distributor) and IACV recently. tried the MAP sensor of a friend as well.

In terms of drivability and power (before 5000rpm) its great. its just really irritating for the engine stop revving at 5000 rpm.

Please help!

oh and one more thing. this is my original motor. no swaps at all.

I am having the same problem with my 1994 honda accord ex. Have you had any luck fixing this problem?
Honda told me it was due to having aftermarket plugs and wires. So I replaced plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. No fix vtec does work but at 5000 rpm or so it so t shirt unless I let off of the pedal, then get back on it. I know it is not in the transmission, as I have replaced it due to other issues and the problem still exists.

Verify your factory tach is reading correctly. Pretty common for the tach to start reading progressively lower. Mine 'cuts out' at 5Krpm, but on an ancillary tach it reads correctly/cuts out at the right rpm.
