Complete DOHC ZC swap or a d16z6 (any D-series,but those are my fav.)or an LS swap-possibly a b20 non vtec.they can all be done for less than 1800.

EDIT: Assuming you can do the swap yourself. You'll save alot of $$ that way

You should try to pick up a ls and do that swap, Than later on you can sell it or build a LS~Vtec. Try this site http://www.car-part.com See if there is any local junkyard selling a b16(search for Del Sol engine) or a LS engine in your area. Even a b17.

Sure get a LS if you wanna replace cams, or have your piston blowing through your walls, those engines arent ment for high rpm's, low R/S.
B16A would be worth your time and money!
