car overheating.! stock d16a6
well the other day i was sitting in my car for about 30 minutes and didnt notice it was overheating. well then my radiator exploded cuz it was getting so hot and steaming.
i replaced it just thought my rad. was old and just gave out. but today i was sitting there again for about 20 or 30 minutes and didnt notice it was overheating but i smelled coolant and i saw it steaming a little so i turn my car off blah blah and let it cool down.
so im thinking it could be the waterpump needing replaced. ive got about 120k original miles on my a6. my dad also said it could be the thermostat?
should i just replace both the waterpump and thermostat.
*Oh and it doesnt overheat when im driving only if i let it sit for about 30 minutes.

if its the original waterpump and thermo go for it! its definitely overdue. does the fan kick on?

could be thermostat fan and pump.best way to deal with it is to replace all of the above including flushing out your system.
people say if it aint broke dont fix it,but to me in a situation like this its better to fix it now then wait till it does break and mess something else up.

thats the thermostat right that kicks on the fan.</TD></TR></TABLE>
if the fan doesnt turn on, check to see if the harness is plugged in
, then check the coolant temp switch (turns on the fan) on the back of the block to make sure the harness is still connected

I went through all that, first thermos, then water pumps, then new radiator, then new headgasket, found head gaskets kept blowing, so I thought warped head, new z6 rebuilt head, and now it still blows the head gaskets and overheats.
NEXT REBUILT BLOCK..... I hope it does not go that far for you.

... if it is connected and the fan still doesnt turn on heres what to do... use a paperclip or a small piece of wire and jump the 2 wires going to the CTS... if the fan turns on then the relay is fine and the sensor is most likely the prob... if the fan doesnt turn on then its prob the relay... this is true only if your fan is good... if you replace everything and it still doesnt turn on then you prob need a new fan motor... and like someone said earlier, go ahead and fix the waterpump and thermostat... its all about preventative maintenance

well this weekend im replacing *waterpump, thermostat, alternator, timing belt, headgasket. and anything else like that. also i think im gonna get new pullys prolly from aem. just something to add while i have it all ripped apart.
so if that doesnt work ill probably end up hardwiring my fan so its on all the time.

the best 3 things id say to do is replace the thermostat check the fan relay and check the 2 prong plug on the back of the block that is up and to the left from the oil filter
If your car overheats, and you have checked that the fan doesnt kick in (its pretty easy to chek anyway, just go outside and pop the hood
), then its either the fan itself, or the thermoswitch. Check if the fan turns on when you jumper its connector, and if its OK simply replace the thermoswitch. Pretty simple actually.....
