Default Motor Oil

I have been researching on H-T on opinions on which brand of synthetic oil to use, so I went with Mobil 1 in the R, and its running smoothly so far, but I had a question on Shell Helix synthetic oil, any opinions on it or how it performs?

Shell Helix is good oil, but very expensive and difficult to sourse... at least here in Toronto...

Why not use Motul 8100 or 300v?

That's pretty rare as well...

Personally, I've settled for AMSOil currently, (coming off Mobil1 in the past)...

Of course... being another "Oil Thread" you'll hear plenty... not just plenty... but PLENTY!!! You'll know what I mean if you go back into the archives.

Not too rare here in Toronto... however, you are correct... you are not going to see Motul at Walmart or Canadian Tire store...

If you're running Mobil 1, be sure to check your oil level frequently. C5's are infamous for eating Mobil 1.

Seems like B series motors like eating Mobil 1.

I'd go with 5w-30. Recommended from honda..

depends on what type of climate you live in.

here in cali we only need 10w30.

5w is the weight of the oil when it's cold...if you look at the helms manual...
it'll explain it too..if you live in cold *** places or it's winter time and the temp
goes below 30 degrees, use 5w30.

otherwise, 10w30 is superior..not so much **** in it that makes it pourable in colder climates...which makes the oil breakdown faster/not last as long.

I've experimented with various viscosities and my car runs and performs best with Mobil 1 0w40. It does drink the stuff though (almost a quart lost between oil changes).

I'm just going by what it says on my oil cap from honda; 5w-30 year around. This is for a b16a2. I think it's the same for the ITR. Like you said, depending on your year-around climate you change it up..

According to the owner's manual and service manual for the ITR, 5W30 is preferred at all temperatures. 10W30 is also acceptable if outdoor temperatures are above 20 degrees F, but 5W30 is still preferred at those temperatures.

How about a synthetic cheaper the M1? I currently run M1 5w30, but money is tough right now, but I would still like a decent oil. How abot Castrol SYNTEC? or anything else? How about oil filter? I currently use M1, but need something cheaper. I hear STP and bosch are about equal to the M1, but half the price. Anyone help out? Thx

You can get Mobil 1 for $23.xx for a six-quart case at Sam's and Costco. Some Wal-Marts sell a five-quart jug for $17-19. I haven't heard of any major brand full synthetic that's less than that.

I wouldn't use anything other than a Honda brand oil filter. $5.05 each or $48.00 for a case of 10 from A&H.

try 5w-30 bmw high performance synthetic oil . its ACEA A3 rated which gives it a HTHS of 3.5 or greater. this oil is built to last bmw's long oil change intervals. you can find it at some dealerships for $4/quart. and its made by castrol in europe.

and if you cant afford synthetics try the high mileage oils. they are actually synthetics blends consisting of mostly a group II base with some group V esters mixed in as well.

Good info ejprimo.

Like Ken mentioned, you can find Mobil 1 for a decent price at the places he listed. I've purchased it at Walmart also. Castrol Syntec (I am using it now) is the same price as Mobil 1 in my area. I've heard good things about Valvoline synthetic and their high mileage oils..
