Circuit City F'ed my Hatchy Up ......Need Help
Heres the story ........... I bring my car into circuit city the other day to get a headunit installed in my 93 hatchy ..... The installation was suppose to be free , but they said they had to add on some harness because the previous radio was rigged in and they had to hard wire it ........... Well anyways I went along with getting the new harness , and they installed the radio ......... I pick up my car and drive away and for the next 2 days I smell a really weird smell almost as if it was about to make me pass out ( burning wires ) . I think nothin off the smell really , until i try and use my wipers and they dont work ..... I try my sunroof and that doesnt work either ...... Bring it back to circuit city to get checked out and they say its just a blown fuse ......... they change it and i drive away ..... i try and use my wipers they work and then i try and use them again and the fuse is again blown ............ I bring it back to the shop and the guy tells me it isnt his fault and he couldnt cause the fuse to blow over and over again by simlpy installing the radio, gives me an attitude and stops talkin to me ................I leave and later that night my interior light to my dash are going on an off when i tap on the dash board ............. em i stupied or is this guy makin any sence > ? what should i do
to prove he fucked my car up and make him fix it

Not exactly true....now they were the last ones to work on your car. You did say
the old radio was "homied" by the previous owner, right? Look..I have done
coutless installs and have found ghetto rigged circuits when doing simple deck installs. Go back and ask to speak with the manager...calmly explain that you
had a radio installed and now you are having other issues. You just want to rule
the radio as the cause. ( the radio has its own harness grouping that may share
a fuse with other components). If the previous owner "rigged" some circuits..
it will show up. And if they say they will charge 1 hr shop billing ($45-50 hr)
...take it. its a lot cheaper than the $75.00 charge for the car just sitting in a
service bay plus labor.

I am in Canada and i believe circuit city is similar to our future shop or something along those lines...they claim to have certified installers....now if the wires are cut so what...those wires are still supposed to be hooked up correctly, I too have done countless installs and have had cars come in with wires chopped. Your business is supposed to offer "top quality" service and if they tested it and it worked great. But obviously they have connected something wrong in the back. You are supposed to uphold your service....that's what creates good business. Customer relations. I will agree though if they do charge you a small fee to do this I would take it...it is something that was probably not included in a "basic install" that you were initially charged with.
F*ed up sh*t...besides...you don't need the f*en harness. I've done a lot of stereo installations for both my cars and friends' cars and it's always been fine. No wire harness is necessary. That's just some sh*t they tell you to get you to spend your money....what could be wrong is the following, one of your wires might be bare and making contact with your chassis or some other metal component. That is why your dash begins acting up and your gauge lights flicker (right?). That's also why you are short circuting your fuses. Anyways, you simply have a loose wire and this most likely short fuses a 7.5 fuse under your hood as opposed to the one under your dash. This 7.5 is a back-up fuse.
kno3....i have been installing for almost 22 years. I am from an age of which
adaptor harnesses were not around...so on one point you are correct.
But why ghetto rig a deck when you really dont have too....to save a few bucks?
look I have fixed so called installs like that when guys who 'have been doing this
for years' yet i see the work a go like WTF. The new jack installers dont have
the diagnostic skills of us old guys...so i'll say it again. take it back and
CALMLY seek a resolution...if you clown...nothing will get done

if indeed the harness was cut, the harness they installed is probably a new factory harness (best buy does the same thing). a number of things could actually be your problem, it might by coincedance that they were the last ones to work on your car. the best thing you can do is what audioroach said, go back and CALMLY talk to a manager. let them look at it and hopefully find the problem, you might be surprised what the problem might be. it could be something such as a defective wiper switch. i doubt that it would be a loose wire since circut city solders their connections. goodluck
Sorry but I work for CC in so.cal, first off we don't carry the stock harness or reverse harness like BB(used to work there also), If you were charged for anything it should have been a hard wire charge of 15.99. Just talk it back to the shop and either ask for the install manager or assistant mgr. they should be able to take care of you.
Like Audioroach said, go there and CALMLY ask for them to resolve this problem. I work for CC too and believe me, most of the time, as long as you're not asking for something totally unreasonable, they'll take care of it. Also, most people we "take care of" are usually the ones that stay calm. Once you start screaming and cussing, managers usually get on the offensive and will give you the "well since you're being such a dick, I'm not gonna give you squat" treatment. If after you talk to the install manager and your problem is still not resolved, go to the next level and ask for the store director.
Well, since everyone else employed by circuit city is replying, here's my $.02
The "Harnesses" you were sold, were what we call "smart harnesses". They sold you one harness for the car side (on your receipt it probably shows 'MET 801720') and one for the radio (again on the recipt 'MET al1680, jv1680, pa0180, pr0180...)depending on what radio you bought.
We use two harnesses even on a hardwire application, because the two harnesses connect in the middle universally, so we can match up any vehicle harness to any radio we sell...makes life much simpler for the installer and not to big a dent in the wallet, also if you ever take the radio back for whatever and end up getting a different brand radio, just unplug one haness and plug a new one in.
And i will give a big
to the calm approach, it will open many doors, if they do go back and find something wrong that someones else did, they might not even charge you to fix it if you are cool about it.
Now that little BS lesson in parts used is over, just remember, you're installer is your friend!

I used to work for Best Buy, and have dealt with these situations. Usually it came down to what i wanted to do. If the customer was very calm and nice to me i would get it fixed for them. However, if they were dicks to me i would tell them to leave the store and not come back. Since everything worked after you left, and didn't come back right away, CC cannot be held liable for that. However, if your cool w/the guy doing the claim you might get it fixed.
