Improved LSD for ITR -- who makes one?
I know the oem LSD in the R is good, but I can't help to think that there are better ones out there. What is the short list of ones that would work better for autox and track events? Quaife, Kaaz, etc??
Thanks.
Thanks.
Mugen - clutch type
Spoon (?)
Kaaz - clutch type
Quaife - helical gear
Most are configurable for 1.5 way (accel only) or 2-way operation (effective during braking and acceleration) - but all of the aftermarket LSDs are really noisy and require a lot more servicing (esp the clutch types) than the stock unit.
Stick with stock unless it's pooched.

ATS makes on too. most cars in japan run ATS if you check...good stuff, mean a$$ clutches too, you can see there stuff at racingcraft.com.
I replaced my stock one with a Quaife. I am *much* happier with it. The stock one would lock and unlock on the track resulting in unpredictable steering wheel feedback through turns. (made it a pain to hold the line) The Quaife is smooth and solid. Plus you make back 2/3 of your $ selling the stock one . . .
If you ever race/autox . . . Thhn it's *definetly* worth while!!

i swapped my stock helical out for the A.T.S. 1.5 way. f'in awesome!! i should have done it years ago. mine, surprisingly does not make too much noise.
Good replys guys. That helps a lot. This will mainly be for autox, so it looks like the ATS and the Quaife will probably be the best. The car only gets driven on weekends for fun or autox, so I'm not too worried about fluid changes or noise.

I know that a good clutch LSD is hell to maintain(changing fluids...). Quaife has been around for some time now and they're making pretty good products. I'm definately considering the Quaife even though I'll be doing quite a bit of track driving.
I replaced my stock one with a Quaife and have been very happy. I road race my car and I really try to be smooth with my power application so I wasn't expecting a noticable difference but I can say that it is quite noticable. I have never dragged my car and so I had never really tried to see how it would hook up from a standing start but I was filling up my rain tires one night a few weeks ago and some kids told me to smoke em and as a joke I dumped the clutch at about 4000+ and I scared the crap out of me!! It really hooked up and I was in the gas station parking lot! Of course it was one of though moments when everyone within visual distance was looking at me! I never street race and if you have ever seen a pic of my car it is very visible, so I drove home back alleys. Oh the Shame!

if it were me and money were no object I'd go ATS carbon LSD. I can't afford one for the WRX so I'm going Kaaz which is very good and very reasonably priced. Cusco and Quaife are the others out there. Spoon and Mugen also although Spoon is just a Kaaz in a Spoon box.
Why don't you like the Quaife? Or actually, why do you prefer clutch type LSD? Just curious...
but for maintenance issues the quaife would be the no-brainer. if i had to do it again i would go quaife although i would miss my old kazz
(note that i'm mostly street)and then there is the issue of weight... i can't substantiate this, but i've heard that because of all the gears in the quaife it weighs too much more than a clutch type? can ne1 comment on this?
Haha you da man Victor!!

The quaife lsd we have in the crx is awesome. Response is immediate and you really know that you have an lsd in almost every turn, especially coming out of tighter turns. However, I've been autocrossing the Type R now for a while and also took it on the track several times and I don't see any downfalls of the stock lsd. What exactly is bad about it? I think it is excellent and have not been in any conditions where it didn't perform as it should. I am very curious to know exactly what the difference is between running a stock lsd in a type r and a quaife, for example. btw, all the times I've watched my co-driver do mild launches at the autox, both wheels spin. So I don't understand how another lsd would help it in this regard.) Thanks for any info!
Other clutch type difs help because they lock both sides together enhancing grip even when both tires are spinning (unlike gear types). THe ITR one can not transfer as much pwoer to one wheel as the aftermarket ones, it also is only 1 way and lastly it requires a certain amount of steering input to even start working (which was the most annoying trait I found). I hat ethe ITR dif with a passion but for some it is enough I guess. All depends on the individual and his or her needs.
Cusco MZ which is is there newest LSD is one good alround LSDs and another good LSD is OS Giken. Also Spoon uses parts from Vickers which is the reason why both Vickers LSD and Spoon LSD are interchangable. Also most that make there own LSD's sell there own LSD oil..which is normally formulated for there particular applications.
