Default Advancing Ignition Timing?

I went to advance my timing. I hooked up the jumper wires and the timing light sensor to the cylinder furthest away from the distributor(usdm driver side). I turned the distributor towards the firewall. The timing marks a lil to the right. Did I advance the timing or retard it? (It sounded like the rpm went up about 100rpm at idle)

it sends the computer into limp mode. If you don't jump it, the computer will keep correcting as you turn it. It is a little blue socket above the ecu on the passenger side. Jam a paper clip in both sides (connection), and it sends the computer impotent mode.
