Input Shaft Bearing
My tranny has recently started to make a noise. When in neutral and the clutch not pressed in it makes this terrible helicopter like noise, when pressed in-no more noise. I have searched and alot of the posts say it is the input shaft bearing. I do believe this is what it is, but I want to be sure that that is the only thing. Could it be anything else? I am going to bring it to a tranny shop to get it fixed. Just want to get more info.

I had a clutch throw-out bearing that made a loose rattling noise when it was unloaded. The noise went away when you disengaged the clutch. That's a possibility; here's something to check...
Engine running, in neutral, clutch engaged (pedal up). It'll be making noise. Now suddenly disengage the clutch (press down the pedal). A noisy throw-out bearing will get quiet instantly. The tranny input shaft will take maybe 2 or 3 seconds to coast to a stop. How quickly does YOUR noise stop??

That's what I thought it might be also, the throw out bearing. When I press in the clutch pedal the noise goes away immediately. So it might just be the throw out bearing? I hope so. Wouldn't driving conditions change if it was the input shaft bearing?

Both the throw-out bearing and the input shaft bearings can make similar noises, youi can tell the diff if you know what you are doing, but this can't be done over a board like this.
Although, I usually find it is the input shaft bearings if the car has been driven agressively at all, and the driver can't properly rev match (which is 99% of the drivers out there).

Thats verry true, but if you have a bit of experience you can tell in real life. Or worth a try. 98ctr

Are civic si throw out bearings the same as integra ls throw out bearings. They're both b sries trannies so I could only assume so. There aren't any acura dealerships around here.

If just pressing the clutch down a little bit makes the sound go away, I would bet on the throwout bearing. The input bearing will usually sound different depending on how much load the trans is under, louder under heavier load and quieter under light load.
Well if you are going to drop the tranny to check/replace the throw out bearing, check for input shaft play by wiggling it up and down or side to side. There should be no play. If there is, then the input shaft bearing inside the trans is going out.
