Hey Guys I'm in the process of installing my lsd and ran into a snag. This is going
into my 01 GS-R. My stock diff came installed with ball bearings not tapered
bearings. I got the speedo gear, final drive, new bearings installed on the quaife
put back in the case all 16 tranny bolts torqued to the required 20 ft/lbs. I then
started flipping through the helms for clearance specs and all of it refers to the
preload of the taper bearings which I do not have. I flipped ahead to the automatic
which is shown with ball bearings and it gave a clearance spec of .15mm between
the shim and outer bearing race. I then checked with a feeler gauge and have
probaly exactly .15mm of clearance but I'm not sure if this is the correct clearance
to use. I even called quaife and they weren't sure so if anyone could shed some
light I would appreciate. I've done searches and I couldn't find anything except
I know I want to do this right once.

Your perfectly fine. You basically only want a cunthair of clearance with the
ballbearings. You really only need enough clearance to allow for whatever possible
expansions in the the metal take place. The most important thing is that the shims
are installed so that the ring gear/countershaft are aligned correctly.
With the tapered bearings its a whole different story, but just relax. Your fine.

 

Thanks man, I just want to make sure this is right and I figured since quaife didn't
know I was hoping someone in my honda family would.

Ha Ha good catch!!!

I don't have a ATS clutch I have a RPS single plate Carbon/Carbon clutch good for over 500 ft/lbs. The motor will go back in the car in a few weekends, still have small oem things to get.

i was talking to bill about the clutch i wanted, and he said you got and ats also

Yes, what rioninja said. I think the spec is a little smaller than .15mm. I think the max is .1mm, but you should be fine. Someone with a Helms handy should verify this.

Mike, is it hard at all to install the lsd? I mean, I did almost everything else to the engine, but messing around with the tranny. I do have a gsr engine and want to get the lsd install. Wonder if you can give me a hand when i'm ready.

I have a helms and it doesn't have the clearance number for ball bearings on a
manual transmission, that's my dilema. It gives clearance numbers for tapered
roller bearings but not the ball bearings. In the helms they show a auto with
.15mm so that's what I was going by, I'm going to call acura and see if they
will tell me.

Sure I'll help anyway I can but really I followed the helms step by step up untill
this very last part. Actually it's not that bad, that hardest part about the thing is
pulling off the speedo gear off of the stock differential. I actually took it somewhere
to have it done because if you break it your screwed, you either have to buy a
whole new diff or find one used somewhere.
