Tapered differential bearings to ball bearings - which shims to use?
I am putting a type r lsd with ball bearings into my GSR tranny which previously had a differential with tapered bearings in it. I know that I will need to check the clearance after I install the differential and and may need to adjust it using different shims. My question is, do I first start off with using all three of the shims that were being used with my original differential? The reason I ask is that my manual shows the differential for a B18B1 (which uses ball bearings) only having one shim where as my differential for my B18C1 (which used tapered bearings) had three shims. Also, I removed both of the races for the tapered bearings. Was this the correct thing to do? Thanks a lot!

Re: Tapered differential bearings to ball bearings - which shims to use?
I think I just found my answer in this thread - https://honda-tech.com/forums/acura-integra-6/tranny-overhaul-jdm-itr-final-drive-lsd-install-56k-not-so-much-795700/
This is a quote from IN VTEC's write up - "Since we switched to the enclosed ball bearings, we will no longer use a 79.5mm shim. Instead, we'll only be using a single 80mm diameter shim on the gear housing and no shims on the clutch housing side."

Re: Tapered differential bearings to ball bearings - which shims to use?
I checked the clearance and purchased the 1.95mm (V) shim, which is that thickest one that Honda sells. After installing the shim and replacing the casing, I checked the clearance again. I am still able to fit a .356mm feeler gauge between the bearing and the shim. The clearance is supposed to be within 0 and 0.1mm. Because I purchased the largest shim available, the only way that I can think of to get the clearance between 0-0.1mm would be to purchase two more shims which together would be about 2.3mm thick. Is it okay to use two shims together? Should I do this, or should I just leave it how it is and not worry about it? Thanks

What other size bearings are there? 19.5mm? Those would be too thick. Are there supposed to be spacers between the bearings? There weren't any on there before. Would if cause any problems to use two shims together?

GSR trannys that went from tapered bearings to normal setup used 19.5mm inner races.
yes, It was a headache, but no complaints yet.

Re: Tapered differential bearings to ball bearings - which shims to use?
I guess I am still confused as to whether or not I am doing this correctly. Right now, I have only one 80mm shim (1.95mm thick, the thickest one Honda makes) on the gear housing side. I am not using any other spacers or shims, and I have removed the races for the original bearings.
Even with the 1.95mm thick shim, I am still about 0.3mm away from being within the acceptable clearance. Is it okay for me to put two shims together?
