thoughts on turbo'ing stock d16a6 w/178k on it....
Its tax return time and I have a hook up on getting a small turbo kit using a super 60 turbo running maybe 5-6psi. Just wondering if my motor will hold up ok, its ready to turn 178,000 miles. Motor runs strong now, about 20k ago, it had a another head installed (timing belt snapped on freeway
) along with a new timing belt and water pump. I've been told it smokes a little out the back under full throttle (possibly worn piston rings?) but besides that it runs great.
Anyone have experience with running boost on a high mileage d16a6? I figure if it does blow up for some reason although I doubt it cause the shop that would do it knows their ****, if anything did happen, its just a sohc and I can get another one cheap as ****.
I've done B16s in my previous EFs and I am not impressed that much due to the lack of torque and having to wrap it out to 8k just to go fast. I figure I will gain a decent amount of torque from the boost and it should be a fun daily driver to play with.
Opinions?

a good plan would be to have a rebuilt (maybe for low compression if money allows) shortblock in you garage waiting to replace the old one when it blew. you can turbo the D16 and then start working on a replacement block. chances are the turbo kit will cut the d16's life by a substantial amount if its really the rings since it will be sompressing more air past them.
here is a hint. A6 block with a Z6 head will net a little higher than stock compression while a Z6 block and an A6 head will net lower than stock compression (good for boost) contact 89dxhunchback he has done that backwards mini-me

Having another shortblock waiting is a good idea, I can prolly find one really cheap. I'm just wondering if its gonna be a good idea to boost it now with all the miles it has. I really don't want to have the bottom end give out after like a couple days of boost. It will only be like 5-6 psi non-intercooled at 1st.
Money doesn't really allow a complete rebuild at the moment and I don't really feel like swapping in another motor quite yet....

If youre looking for low end power I think a supercharger would be a hell of a lot easier and probably cheaper and easy to move from one motor to the next.
But I love top end myself

Noted....I'm looking to turbo it cause I can get a great deal on a new turbo kit, I can't afford a JRSC.....

correction, if he wants turbo, i would only do a 14b, or a t-25 non ballbearing turbo, anything bigger is over kill, full spool around 2500rpm's for the t-25,TD04H, or 14b, smaller the better for a 1.5 liter motor, good tuning helps, i wounldt evan have a intercoller just use a 15$ cone filter, http://www.homemadeturbo.com

to be honest...I wouldnt boost an engine with 80K, let alone 170K...
That engine is tired...rebuilding it would be a smart move....If you cant afford a swap or a rebuild, id hold off and save your money..good deal or not.
Good deal now could end up bad deal real quick....

my d16a6 has 200,xxx miles on it + a 14b turbo runing 10psi daily. i've had it turboed since 180,000 miles runs great and seems reliable. the motor will take it. if it goes just get another motor for dirt cheap.

Awesome, thanks for your input!! Any more details on your set up?

Ya go ahead with it these D blocks are stronger than people think and if well taken car of can go well over 200000 miles.
To tell you the truth I think you are looking for trouble. I wouldn't turbo a 178K, considering you said it already smokes a little and I guess that you probably already have been beating on it. And I'm not sure how crxY-49 motor is still holding up specially with 10psi
but I give him respect for it. But yeah man its a little to risky. But you can always find another d series bottom end for like $100 if it blows, so its up to you.
