Turned around subs
Is there any function to have the magnet side of a subwoofer o the outside of the box? I have been seeing this trend more and more, originally I thought people ,wanted to show off the size of their magnets, but now I am starting to wonder if there is something else to it.
Do subs mounted this way have to be wired differently, does it matter which way the cone moves?

I have my system mounted with my subs inverted as well, it looks great and gives you more space in the box that the subs would have been displacing. You dont HAVE to change any wiring but some reverse the polarities. I didnt see a difference
you only have to change polarity on the subs if you have a pair facing different directions....meaning one with the mag in the box, the other with the mag out. The cones must be moving in the same direction relative to the baffle for them to operate properly - especially if they are in a single chamber!

about what?
about what?
i just don't think mounting the subs upside down does anything for me. i don't think is looks any better, and i am unsure if it really is gonna sound any better. the sub is designed with a cone in a certain shape to promote sound. I would agree with the fact the increased volume is a plus, but i just don't think i am ready to reverse my subs yet, plus my magnet doesn't look that great anyway. Also, i haven't gotten the chance to hear a system with inverted woofers, to see if it is a plus or a negative.
Also I like my trunk space, adding a box takes some away. I am okay with taking some away for subs but when you flip them around they take up so much more room. It just seems like it's more for show then anything.

Me too. A lot is based on surface area, and think about how much surface area you lose when playing out of the back of the sub.

you only loose the area where the coil is connected to the cone - 2-3" in diameter...not that significant...
Then agian, you may not lose anthing, and the air flows through the coil and out the cooling vents...then again, I don't know that much about subs to say for certain...

Surface area is still there, because remember, there is always front and rear soundwaves.
What matters the most is the radiating surface area, and that stays constant no matter how you mount the woofer.
How about if we're using a subwoofer in an infinite baffle? There will be two cabin, the trunk and the inside of the car itself. One could argue which was is backwards and which way is correct. Could the cabin be the right side? or the trunk? Just as long as the front and rear soundwaves are separated, it doesn't matter. Radiating area stays fixed.
