should i shot peen my stock y8 rods?
well im completly rebuilding my motor. only down side is its gonna be completly stock rebuild. should i shot peen my y8 rods to make them a lil stronger or should i leave everything alone? let me know TIA. oh and how much would it cost and where in cali can i do it so cal.
If your going all stock rebuild I would say go for it. If you are going to spray on the motor I would reccomend new rods, because shot-peening makes them more brittle. As for a price I'm pretty sure you can get them done for about $20 a rod out here...Don't see why the price would be more in Cali.

brittle doesn't necessarily mean weaker...en example would be carbon fiber..
it is incredibly strong (example: bike frame)...however, if I threw a rock at it hard enough, it has the potential to shatter, whereas a metal might dent.

Why a stock internal rebuild??? For only about $200-$300 more you can use some SRP pistons and Eagle Rods and have a bottom end that will hold 350-400whp.
shot peening prevents weakness in the rod. It doesn't necessarily "strengthen it" it just prevents fatigue in the metal. It's a form of compression strengthening the metal. Personally, i'd just buy new rods. But shot peening can be done for lik $10-20 per rod....so it's up to you.

cuz i got all the rebuild parts for around $300 acl bearing kit, arp head studs, arp rod bolts, complete gasket kit, timing belt, oil pump, water pump, head gasket
dont have enough for aftermarket. plus i gotta get my crank micro polished and gotta send my head in for a vj
so hopefully it wont cost me much.

wasting money for shotpeening and arp rod-bolts on those shitty D rods, the rod will split in half before the stock rod-bolts cause a problem,if your going low budget and pinching pennies..try modded B-Series rods with Forged Suzuki Vitara Pistons.
btw..and your wasting money on the arp studs for your set-up too

ARP head studs aren't a waste at all. They're great. The best part is if you keep blowing gaskets or need to keep removing the head you can reuse them unlike stock bolts. If you get new bolts, get ARP no questions asked.
As for those pistons, you can give them a shot. Im sure they'll be good for 18-20psi. They're cast but they're made with a stronger metal than most cast, and can take a higher heat. They're definately worth the money (for 123) no questions asked. The rods are the weakpoints. As long as you're tuned and have eagle rods you should be fine.
