Well yeah, people have, and do boost these motors with stock internals. But I am just suggesting that if he is going to spend the money to put in some new pistons, he might as well do the rods at the same time. If a rod goes, then well you're back to where you started and it'll be time to take it all apart again. And if he knows how to do it himself it's going to cost time, and if he doesn't, well it's going to run him more money than it would have if he would've just done it in the first place.
And the question was, is it worth it? And I would have to say most definitely yes, it is worth it.

Good point. I think my buddy was going to rebuild the motor with rods and pistons eventually, he just put the turbo on and if it blew up, it blew up and he would rebuild it. But it just hasn't blown up.

Your motor is as strong as it's weakest point. A stock D-motor can handle ~220hp(psi is irrelevant). If you just upgrade the pistons, you're still maxed out at ~220hp. If your power goal is less than that, might not need to upgrade and just run stock until it blows up. If you want more, save up. Or just slap a turbo, run low boost until you upgrade internals and then just dial up the boost and tune.
