when i start the car it goes whir whir whir then KNOCK! its a stock b18c-r , only mods are b16b cams. it only knocks once upon startup, but that sound is like the kiss of death to me, and i want to get rid of it at all costs

 

In the mornings during cold starts, after it fires up, I hear this knocking really fast, sounds like its piston slap or something. I'm thinking it's the same thing you are experiencing. Either that or my motor is about to blow!

Not sure what to make of it, my car still runs strong though.

hows the oil, old?

 

just changed the oil. my knock only happens when the car is already warmed up and i need to restart it. doesnt knock when its cold started. and my knock is just one big knock when the engine catches, it doesnt knock after that

 

I get the same thing in my beater occassionally. Usually only on very cold morning start ups, but sometimes when its not so cold. I was told it was a bad sign but its been doing it for about a year and the motor runs fine otherwise so I never worried about it. Plus its on my beater so I dont really care.

 

How many miles on the motor?

 

are you running the right ecu, fuel pressure, ignition timing, maybe spark plugs.

are you using a different oil filter?

 

spark plug #3's electrode broke off and my motor developed a signicant "knock" that would noticeably shake the car (no related noise). i replaced the plug and problem solved.

 

m using honda oil filter, checked the spark plugs and timing, everything was ok. using the stock p73 ecu. only thing i havent checked is the fuel pressure
