Default distributor timing.

well everything besides the thermo sensor is hooked up on my obd1 b16a (just haven't had the time to get it hooked up) but i got a problem. the thing wont start up. im trying to narrow my ideas down and figure out whats going on by doing some searching etc. but my uncle said that everything else sounded like it was proper except that my timing sounded off. he said that i was 180 degrees off. i tried to talk to him and figure out how to correct this, but he couldn't explain it all that well. i figure i could just take the distributor off and turn it manually perhaps then set the motor on compression stroke and go from there. i did some searching but i didn't really get what i was looking for. anyone got any insight? thanks.

Dizzy only goes in one way. Just make sure the timing belt is on correctly. Put the bitch to TDC and make sure the notches on the stock cam gears line up!

You did replace the timing belt, right?

Also, make sure the dizzy is in the center of its range of motion, and not retarded all the way.

i meant like take the distributor off, turn the rotor on the distributor to the number one piston spark plug and then put it back on. would that work? my timing is correct i believe i got some of the h-t members to take a look at it. heres the link

Set crank to tdc, take off valve cover and set cam gears at tdc using the holes in the cams (you can see the holes right by the gears, i stick small allen wrenches in them) The dizzy rotor only goes in 1 way, aligned with the cam gear so dont worry about that. Looking at your other post it looks right on. Also make sure the spark plug wires are in the correct order. Have you removed the dizzy since receiving the motor? If not then you can assume that its adjusted reasonably, if you have removed it then adjust it towards the retarded side a bit to prevent possible detonation. good luck.

well, maybe this will put another probability in it. im not sure if it matters, but i put in some new cam seals and when doing this i was trying to get the cams gears off. well they turned every which way in the process. would this possibly get the distributor timing off from the cams?

Nope, the cam gears have woodruff keys that allow them to only be put on one way, unless you didnt usse them then you might have a problem. Theyre little tabs that the gear and cam have a groove machined into them that this key slides into, it keeps them aligned properly.

yeah, i made sure i put the woodruff key back in and they are both lined up at tdc.
i just dont think my distributor is firing on the number one cylinder on the compression stroke. that is possible right? thats why i think im 180 degrees off.

put the engine at TDC, remove the dist cap adn see where the rotor is pointed. if it is at #1 you need to start looking for another problem. if not remove dist and set it so the rotor is at #1
