stupid question of the day on d16z6 vtec dowels

stupid question of the day on d16z6 vtec dowels
i jsut dropped a head on the block and am second guessing myself....i dont recall if teh dowels are in or not.
stock head gasket and im using head studs as well.
how important is it to have the 2 dowels in? im worried sincde i am not sure i put em in but i would then need to buy a new head gasket since i already torqued the head down right?
