Question on complete Head replacement And what I need?
I have recently bought a 94 civic hatch dx. her name is felicia. she isn't a nice car.
i had two problems. starting and coolant..
took it to my mechanic and he told me i have a fucked up head.
being a honda and the parts being cheap, i bought a new head. (well.. used.. but still)
This is where I'm kinda confused.
The engine in the car originally is a d15b7 non vtec engine.
Previous owner did a head swap. p08-5. AKA d16z6 vtec head.
So as of right now i have a d15b7 block with a d16z6 head.
What kind of head did i buy?
p08-4 aka, d16z6
(didn't want to have to buy a new computer, just wanted it all to be plug and play.)
So heres my question... now that i need a new head, what gasket set do i get? do i get one for a z6 head? or a b7 block?
Any suggested brands?
Any quotes u guys got for this? my mechanic quoted me 800-1300 depending on something or other.
i went to midas or something like that and they quoted me 430 for labor.
(so I'm going to midas..)

Re: Question on complete Head replacement And what I need?
first off, if your trying to put a different head on a different block, let the shop know or find a buddy that's knows a guy who can do it with no problem. midas says 430 now, but when they start experiencing problems, the price goes up. also sometimes, shops wont guarantee their work on a "frank" motor.
this swap has been done numerous times. search in the faq.

Quite sure you should have a buddy, or family to help you out, if you're willing to pay that much just for a head swap wow lol
You will need a headgasket that matches the block, also get some arp head studs

I told the guy he was really cool about it and knew what I was talking about.
He laughed when it said it would take 18 hours for an engine replacement.
I was quoted so much more . Shops around here don't play.
I'd rather have it taken to someone who knows what they're doing uk?
Plus it's a flat rate so if it does take longer I don't pay more. If they need more parts then yeah it might.

And why are ARP head studs needed? they are not unless he plans to turbo it.

I'm thinking about trying this too. I just got an EJ1 and the block has higher compression than factory, except 1 cyl has 0 compression instead of 220.
I have a z6 head in my other car, and that has valve tap but i think its just the lash.

I just did this on my 93 eg. You'll need the headgasket for either the z6 head or y8. Timing belt, 104 tooth, also for the z6 head. If you decide to replace the waterpump while you have it all apart, you get the waterpump for the engine not the head. Might wanna check out what cam sprocket you have on your cooked z6 head, it shoulda been replaced with an adj cam gear or one from a y8. The deck heights are different and the cam sprocket will make up for this when getting your timing right. These guys on here know their stuff. Listen and take notes. They were very helpful and informative when I did mine.
