Broken Engine Bolt
While just messing around today, I took the valve cover of my 99 Si. And lo and behold, I over-tightened one and broke the $hit out of it. Its the one in the picture under the spark plug cover. It broke off less than a half-inch, and is still in tact with the head, just not the valve cover. Any suggestions on maybe an easy fix, and will this hurt anything? Thanks!!
i did this once and it didnt hurt anything, just eventually blew up... just kidding it seeped a small amount of oil around the hole after a while. The bolt goes all the way through the head and into the block, if im not mistaken, this is what will need to be replaced.

No, you're not "mistaked". Strangely, you're not mistaken, either
.
If you need to get the screw/stud/bolt out, slot the top of it with a dremmel and use a flathead screwdriver. It's worth a shot, neh?

Let me get this straight. You were tightening a nut on the valve cover and you broke the stud? If so, just remove the valve cover and simply remove the broken stud with a deep socket. Go to Honda and buy the stud and reinstall it. Simple fix.
I broke a valve cover bolt too....seems to be a popular stem to snap...that has to be the weakest stem on the entire engine.
Now overtighten and snap a head bolt then we need to talk about your torquing ability.

your lucky...i've broken 2 valve cover bolts off into my head. Had to drill them bitches out and then use an ez out to screw them out. It was a pain in the ***.

good answer and the socket is a 12 mm i think. never risk your motor over something so simple to replace. not sealing the valve cover correctly can cause low oil pressure which can cause your **** to go bom!!!!!!

well get ahold of snap-on and they have a screw extractor on sale for like 40 bucks or if you want i can hook you up but the kit will come in very handy for the rest of your life
i've broken about 3 of them...not hard to replace and they don't go into the block.....they aren't very big (maybe like 1 1/2 inches)...about 6 bucks a piece or so at honda...and don't forget the rubber gommet thing
No screw extractors, No drilling required....I just happen to break the top of that bolt too, last night. And I'll be replacing it today....
Youre gonna need to pull off the valve cover, and then you'll see exactly what you need to replace. It does not go down into the block. But once you go get that stud from honda, you need to loosen all the bolt along that cam holder plate. Make sure and do them in the correct order....then once they're all loose, replace the one broken stud with the new one. Retorque them all down to 20lbs, in the correct sequence and then put the valve cover back on and you're done.

well if you dont have a torque wrench, you dont need to be working on your car then. you can get a el cheapo one for $20 that will work just fine.

i broke a valve cover bolt a couple of times, the first time i went and bought a screw extractor set, got home to use it and found out i was able to turn the screw out by pressing my finger on it... the last time i broke a screw i had to use the screw extractor to get it out... so i would recomend you check it out first, most of the time you can use something to help twist it out.
