Default Tranny Problems

We just got a 1990 Honda Accord EX with 175,---k miles on it for free. My dad drove it home, and he said there was something going on with the tranny. The tranny would slip a lot. It's an automagic. I asked my auto teacher, and he said there might not be enough tranny fluid in it. When I went to check it, there was enough. What could be the problem, and how much are these trannies running for?

My 1992 Nissan Maxima GXE's tranny only cost about $300-400. Should I expect the price to be around there?
