Default CAT removal

I'm thinking of removing the Cat from my 1992 JDM 2.2 VTEC (as its registered
Jan 1992 it can pass the UK Exhaust Test without it) but I have read on some car sites
that removing the cat from some cars can be damaging to the engine due
to reduced back pressure at low revs - anyone removed the cat on their
JDM Ludes or know of any problems that can occur, also what were the performance
gains and did the low end torque suffer?

I have a friend wiht a GSR and he just uses a test pipe. He hasn't had any problems and it completed his exhaust setup.
