I've heard nothing but praise for magnaflow. My friend has one on his teg, it's cool and cheap.

Most import mufflers nowadays are straight through designs, meaning, inside the muffler, there's no bends or path changes. It really depends on what look and sound you want, because from a performance standpoint, there's not enough of a difference in power between mufflers to really constitute a debate. I personally use an oval style muffler, cause it looks close to factory, and with a large resonator, it's very quiet.

Exactly. Could have weaker welds or a cheap construction, but overall, it's the same thing, a straight through, canister muffler.

Doing a custom system is not the best choice. I personally have been through 3 systems that were welded and bent with universal mufflers. I used good quality ones too, RSR, Apexi N1, Apexi Dunk. All which sounded like crap, and performed like crap. All my systems failed, meaning the welds rotted and even welds on the muffler. and again SOUNDED LIKE CRAP!!!

i gave up with the welding n now have an HKS Hi-Power cat-back. The difference is night and day. MUCH better performance and gave my car a MUCH better sound. It is VERY deep and VERY quiet. I recommend HKS over any company. Just my .2

Sounds like you went to the wrong muffler shop/s. If the system was built and installed correctly, there would be no difference in performance.

That could be true, but even after all expences fitting a system together...
200.00 for mandrel bent piping
100-200.00 for the muffler
100.00 for welding it all together...plus 50.00 extra for resonators

I just say save for a cat-back from a good company that has been fitted, and tested specificly for your car.

But if you know some people and can get it all done cheaper, then power to you, go for it.
