Quick Q: AEM Short Ram vs. AEM CAI
I'm assuming the Short Ram does not improve performace over stock. But, with a short ram I wouldn't have to worry about hydrolock, would I? How would the sound compare between the two (AEM CAI)? I guess the sound would be the only motivation to get the short ram, since it probably does nothing for performace...am I right?

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the short ram hurt your torque? I heard that somewhere before. If you get the bypass valve you don't have to worry about hydrolock. I've been through many bad rain storms and never had a problem. The CAI was probably the best thing I bought for my car to this point. I don't know about the short ram, but the CAI sounds amazing. Once you put it on, you can't go back.

well what ive found with the AEM CAI is that i and my other friends who put it on has lost alot of low end power and gained some high end. i think im going to sell mine and either put my stock intake or a short ram on.
I can't even feel the difference in the low end. Doesn't feel like I've lost anything down low, but I can definately feel the top end. Besides, when you race, you want everything up on the top end. Who's going to shift at 3k rpm anyways? And besides, you're not going to go under 3krpm anyways when you race...
Get the AEM CAI! It's the best bang for the buck! You'll feel it! Especially on cold nights!

many people experience loss of low end with long intakes like the AEM CAI. Buy a Comptech Ice box and drop in filter and you will not lose low end and will not have to worry about hydrolock either! If you buy the AEM CAI, you better be very careful with puddles of water or you' better buy a bypass valve. I know about 3 people that hydrolocked their engines using AEM CAI!!

It'll hydrolock if you don't have the bypass valve installed too !! hahahahahahaha
Whay are people so paranoid about CAIS??? Do you realize you have to drive through a 8 inch deep puddle to hydrolock ur motor. ALl you have to do is not drive through deep *** puddles!!!! So, basically if you are a moron, dont get a CAI.

so much misinformation about CAIs..
1. People have hydrolocked with the Comptech IceBox (search type-r forum, there was at least one ITR 2-4 months ago that did)
2. On a OBDIIR2 GS-R like the thread creator has benefit the most from a AEM CAI.
3. My 2000 GS-R put down 152.1 and 112.1lbs tq with just the AEM CAI and 18 degrees timing. I never did a baseline but I've seen OBDIIR2 GS-R's putting down 134-142 at the wheels bone stock. 1fastgsr might have a pull of his car bone stock? If not check the integra dynocenter but make sure you look at OBDIIR2 cars.
4. You can't simple say "you have to drive through a 8 inch deep puddle" cause different cars can be lowered differently from others, some higher, some lower. A friends stock suspended (read: HIGH) Civic Si hydrolocked in about 7" of water. If you are idling when it locks and you don't attempt to restart the car you will most likely be fine after removing the water from the motor. This particular car now runs fine and is still getting very good compression numbers and are pretty even across the cylinders (yeah, I know, that doesn't mean the motor wasn't damaged.).
I run a AEM CAI in florida where we have a good amount of flooding on the few times it rains. If you are smart about what you are doing you can avoid the problem 99% of the time. I've been lucky so far, ~35,000 miles with a AEM CAI on my GS-R and no problems with it so far (knock on wood).
Hope this helps, any other questions, feel free to ask. I'm not an expert of course, but I have a little bit of knowledge.
(edit: #2 made no sense. rewrote it.)

to my knowledge short ram's are better if you plan on going fi...i could be wrong though...when i go fi, i plan on cutting my cai into a short ram
Thanks for all the replies, seems like everyone has there own opinions, I guess I'll have to make my own. I'm quite worried about snow. W ehave atleast 3-6 storms a year where the snow will come up higher than your ground clearance and I'm wondering if that will be a problem....
i swapped out my CAI with the short ram for a few days last month when it rained really bad.....i raced a couple of times and really didn't feel any power loss with the short ram.....also in my experience the short rams sound louder than the cold airs, but with my s2 manifold and CTR cams, any intake makes it sound like a monster
alright I live in San Antonio and when it rains here it pours, now I've driven in rain storms and believe me here it floods so easily and I go through puddles but you just have to go slow and don't touch the throttle, to suck water the air filter has to be submerged so pretty much you have to go through a lake, its funny you here of people blowing three engines with hydro-locking and other people have 70,000 miles and no problems, pretty much you have to be a moron to suck water just use your head and if its bad enough just pull over and wait till it calms down

SAV GA. Here
Had my aem cai on for 11 months on a 12 month old car (in my possession) and I have injested water 2 times both on hwy 21 on puddles that were not visable until I was on top of them and I was accelerating both times. I did a compression test on my engine and everything is at stock specs and running great. I also have a rally edition OEM spring suspension. I will lower it soon but i got other plans. I also would not buy that damn bypass valve itz a waste of money u can still hydrolock and I have heard of peepz sucking in one of the valves on it!!! I say just get an iceman and when it gets close to rainy season then swap it to under hood intake.
