how easy is it to replace an oil cooler gasket? (92si)
the oil cooler gasket is leaking. i looked thru the helms manual and have not figured out how difficult it will be to replace it. i picked up the gasket today. are there any issues that i will be running into getting to and replacing it?
take off the oil filter, get a 32mm socket and put it over where the filter screws on, then take out that "bolt" then take off teh cooler get a 2.5" O-ring and put it in the groove on the block side of the cooler, then, do everything i just said in reverse
easy as pie.
don't bother removing the lines that go into the cooler,
just bend it back after you take the adapter bolt off,
slap the new gasket in and you done sun

hey sup. i think im replacing my oil cooler gasket soon too. its the only thing i can think of to fix my oil leak. does anybody have a write up for this kind of procedure? Thanks.
tools
1/2" drive wrachet
30 mm socket
small extension
oil filter pliers (if you need them)
new O-ring
new oil filter (if you screw the old one up)
procedure
1. remove oil filter
2. remove spindle (the thing that the oil filter screws on to) using the 30mm socket with the extension. it might be a bitch so be careful because when it breaks loose so will you.
3. once you get the spindle unscrewed all the way pull it out
4. the oil cooler should then be able to move around. DO NOT remove the coolant lines going to it.
5. remove the old gasket (it will probably be dryrotted and stiff). put the new gasket in
6. put oil cooler back on. screw spindle back in. make sure you hold the cooler down at the same time so you dont rip the new gasket apart. tighten the bolt down.
7. put on new oil filter. add like .25 quart of oil for the new filter. start up and check for leaks. Done!!
hope this helps,
David
btw...somebody put this in faq for future use

hi, just looked under my car right now, FINALLY found out where the oil was dripping from. i think its the gasket between the engine block and the oil filter adapter (if thats even a gasket i mean). It looks like a small leak coming from one of the sides, then it drips onto the oil sending unit (which made me originally think that was the culprit). dw, do you happen to have any pics of the actual oil cooler gasket? i dont really want to be mistaken when i attempt to take it off. when i was at honda earlier this month, they didnt seem to have an oil cooler gasket. is that what the part is really called? cuz when they showed me a diagram of the oil filter area, i didnt notice it. do you think instead of replacing the gasket, i could just tighten the oil filter adapter thing?? thanks in advance bro.
oh another word, i was looking on http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com and noticed i didnt see an oil cooler gasket. the only thing i saw was maybe the o-ring that goes between the oil cooler and the engine block. could that be it?

thats a picture of where the leak is coming from. so would 33 be the "oil cooler gasket"? cuz its listed as an o-ring. do you think i would have to actually replace the whole oil cooler =/ that thing is like 300 bucks!

dang i keep forgetting, is it possible for me to do this procedure without having to drain all the oil in the engine? or can i just drain a little, then remove the oil filter/cool assembly?
its leaking from the oil cooler gasket. its actually an o-ring. it's 33 in that pic. and at honda ask them for the 'oil filter bypass o-ring'. they might know it by that instead. it's like $2

btw...if you tighten it it won't do anything except probably make it worse
damn dude...use the edit button ...you've done 3 posts in the time ive done one..
anyways no you dont have to drain all the oil read the write up i just wrote above your 10 posts haha

lol sorry about all the posts, im still a forum noob. anyways, in ur writeup, u dont mention if i should drain the oil lol, it just says in the end to add like a .25 quart of oil. how thick is this gasket supposed to be? dang only if i could take a picture of it with a digi cam.
the reason you have to add a little bit of oil is because you put a new filter on and it doesn't have any oil it it. so when you start the car up (oil only goes through the oil filter when its running) more oil goes through it resulting in about .25 less in the oil pan.
the gasket is actually an O-ring its like 2.5 in diameter

no problem man. it's easy and shouldn't take you very long to do.
btw...how are you lifting the car?
we have open pits at my work and it took like 10 min. to do so it might be harder if your putting it on jackstands
