Default D16Y8 mods?

Who might be able to recommend some mods for the D16Y8 motor? I have a 97 Civic and I want to know what I might be able to do with this platform.

ya boost it :D

if you dont want to go so extreme... start off with your basic bolt ons... i/h/e, upgrade your suspension, short shifter, thats basics.

depends on what you wanna do really. you can spray it if you wanted to.... but boost is better :D

I already put in a short shifter and I intend on putting a Tein SS suspension on this summer. I am looking to upgrade the ignition system too. What else can I do before I go turbo? I'm not sure when I do go blown whether to buy a kit or piece it together. I don't know much about turbos.

If I'm gonna add a turbo I need to reinforce the block, right? I mean I need to sleeve it , and change out the internals for something stronger, correct?

not if you were to run low psi, say 8-9 with it tuned fairly well. Maybe even up to 12 if you tune the hell out of it. But D-series aren't me fortay

Love my MSD ignition!

A/I will be the first and most satisfying mod, for low budget builds.
Got money? Get Boost.

Well, only if you plan to boost high #s. Anything under lets say 12 psi max I wouldnt touch internals. But if you want to boost anything more than yes, Id recommend upgrading the internals.... stronger rods, etc.

The young buck makes a good point but I think no reinforcement is needed for 6-7psi max. Anything above you are looking for problems. Another thing to think about is how many miles you have on the current motor. Perhaps a few test (compression test, leak down test) will give you some feed back on how your beast is doing. And for any amount of boost remember tunning is your best friend....with out it you can kiss ur power and possibly your motor good bye.

It'll be for road racing, maybe a run down the strip every now and again. If I want to be able to get 200hp's out of it should I go with new internals or not. That is all the power I would like to squeeze outta my D16. I'm not interested in trying to be the fastest out there. I just want a nice ride with power on tap when I want it. Oh yeah by the way the motor just rolled over 80,000 miles.

200 hp... i think you should be right under that with a good setup and stock internals.

regarding the mileage, you'll be ok. just do a compression test, etc as jit up there said to make sure everything is ok. i have about 180k miles on my y8 and im planning on boosting. hopefully everything will be ok... it has been done before.

If you plan to roadrace a turbo car then your biggest issue will be keeping it cool and preventing detonation.

200whp is like the "safe" cutoff limit on stock internals. now i know there are a handful or more cars out there running over 200whp on stock sohc's, but id venture to say that they are all tuned out the ***. even something like a greddy kit, which can be obtained rather cheaply these days, can push like 8psi gettin u around 180 or whp. people are gettin some high 13's with greddy kits on sohc vtecs- and thats damn fast for what it is in my opinion

Agreed.

You'd better look into some good cooling! A nice big front mount IC is a must, then also see what you can do with the radiator as well... Also, oil cooler maybe?

But the Y8 head is a good platform, mostly because of the combustion chamber design - it's very good at resisting detonation. A P&P job would be a good idea, along with a larger T/B (must bore out the Y8 plenum opening though). The Y8 block is only good because of the addition of the knock sensor - the P2P ECU should keep you pretty safe from detonation.

Good luck with it bro! You can get some good power out of your motor if you do it right, and you don't have to spend too much.

Maybe I'm confused. I mean to street racing occassionaly. I was thinking of using the new Edelbrock X intake manifold with this setup. I asked about upgrading the internals, because I wanted to know if I did, would it help me avoid detonation or other problems like it?

doesnt matter if you have the best internals in the world, too much ignition and or too littl fuel will cause detonation.....its ALLLLLLL in the tuning
