Tech Request - My head needs help!
Hi!
On my head there are to 10mm hex nuts - I believe they are called "allen"? that covers the rockershafts. There are two on the right side - and one of the left side. You need a hex socket - like a "brick" for lack of a better explanation.
They wont move. I mean - I have tried everything - and they just wont move.
I need to remove my valvesprings, retainers and valves - and from what I understand - I need to remove the rocker arms before I can do that.
Is there anything in particulor I should be aware of? Can I remove the valves without removing the rocker arms?
Thanks guys!
From the illustration you can see the parts marked with "1" - the bolts I am unable to remove.

find the allen wrench that fits the plug, and put it there, then geta big *** pipe like 3 feet long, put it over it, leverage is the key to help breaking buts loose, we did a itr head, and this method worked perfect

You can remove the springs, retainers and valves with the rockers in place.
Is the head on or off of the motor?

Okey, I got the bolts out.
i need a tool to compress the valvesprings in order for the retainer to loosen, right? Ive look a few places, but I cant find anything that fits in the little space you have in the engine.. Got any ideas?

Thats what the helms is, they are the publishing company. If the head is off the car you can remove the valves and springs etc by using a socket roughly the size of the retainer and giving it a good smack, it will make the keepers pop out. You will need a compressor to to re-install however.
Everything down to the valves can come out without removing the rockers.
If you really do need to remove them (say if you're gonna tank the head), get a 10mm allen head socket. Stick it on a ratchet and smack the ratchet with a hammer.

To remove/install valvesprings you need a special tool

I have this one, and its very nice, but expensive as is all snap on tools. You can probably find a cheaper one that does the same thing if you look around. Its also nice to have a telescoping little magnet to get the keepers (little half circle clips that hold the retainer in) also.

Here is a link to a spring compressor just like the Snap-On one, but cheaper. Even comes in the same red case. Their website says they are on backorder for 8-12 days though.

I've taken the valves out using the socket and hammer method. Very fast and efficient. Sometimes the valve keepers fly off in different directions. We used a shop rag placed over the valve retainer after the first keeper took off.
If you have a friend with real strong fingers he might be able to assemble by hand, if the valve is supported from below(?)
The Snap-On or similar tool is supposed to work on virtually all DOHC heads so you might be able to borrow something similar from another make. It may also be possible to make a knock-off of the tool fairly quickly if you know somebody in a machine shop.
