Fixed back seat and Stock harness
With all the talk of not running just a harness with no roll bar/cage; does anyone have any safety comments about running a fixed back (race) seat with the stock harness? I would think that if you ran the stock lapbelt through the lap belt holes in the seat it would be ok. That as long as the seat wasn't super deep the belt would still be in contact with your body and that would be ok.
Thanks,
Matt

I was thinking the same for a while until guys were strongly recommending the roll bar in the case that I can't keep the shiny side up. It's a valid point and it really got me thinking. On a side note, I recently saw a special on Discovery about a guy who miraculously survived the SF quake of '89. His truck got crushed to like 12 inches in height and when the roof collapsed, he was shoved sideways. It's kind of an exageration for an example of why a roll bar is necessary, but nonetheless, you get the point.

I saw that special too and it was crazy. The roll bar/cage is a very good idea. After reading you post I thought about how hard it would be for your body to slide to the side in say a Sparco Corsa seat. Not likely it would go far enough. The new 911's seats are getting pretty deep, I wonder how they deal with this problem?

i think the seatbelt buckle would be too large to get through the seat openings.. especially because of the nature of the seatbelt, it just wouldn't work properly..
I run the stock belts with my SPG's, but I also have a roll bar. If you plan to run this setup make sure that the side bolsters are not too deep as to make the lap belt not touch your waist. Most seats have the seat belt receptacle in such a position that makes it very difficult to thread the stock belt through the side holes.
If you are running fixed back pair of seats the only logical reason I could see that you wouldn't want a roll bar is to still have back seat passengers, but the thing most people don't realize is that with the fixed back seats, it is very difficult to get back there even without a rollbar. Whenever I have to access the back seat it's easiest to go through the hatch believe it or not.

Good points, thanks. I was thinking you might be able to unbolt the outside waist mount and slide it through the belt hole int he seat and then bolt it back up. The inside with the buckle would be tougher.
As for the NASA rules, thanks for the up date. It that is how things are going I won't worry about it anymore.

I threw mine away so I can't look to be sure, but the lapbelt is attached to the retraction mechnism. It's too large to fit through the side hole. You *might* be able to disassemble the belt from the ratractor, but I seriously doubt it's made to come apart.

Actually, I think it's perfectly legal, per CCR, to run a fixed back seat without a rollbar. With or without a harness. Hence the confusion and chaos.
