Default what to expect when starting up a rebuilt LS/VTEC motor??

yesterday i started up my rebuilt block. i connected everything but gave me a funny noise. it started but didnt seem right. from some reason it was smoking from the inside of the valve cover, and it was making an awful sound. it sounded like it was the pistons not lubercated enough and the belt gave a lot more problem too. when on side of the timing belt is tight, the other is loose as hell. please i need some help if anyone can. thanks guys.

if the timing belt doesn't have even tension on both sides i would DEFINATELY retension it. if you have that slack, it's going to carry over your sprockets, possibly skip some teeth.. then BOOM! not gonna be pretty..

did you lube the cylinder walls when you installed the pistons?
