removing catalyic converter
im planning on removing the catalyic converter and was told that the check engine light will come on. someone told me that when the check engine light comes on the car goes into a safety mode or some sort and will effect the performance of my car. is this true? should i keep it on or will it be ok to remove it. thanx for your help
Yes the check-engine light will most likely come on although they sell O2 simulators to by-pass this problem. I've done a few tests on the dyno and found out that at wide-open throttle (check-engine light on for the secondary O2) the performance was the same.
when you remove the cat do you mean run straight header or are you going to put a test pipe in? Just wondering b/c i'm trying to figure out the reason to WHY you would want to remove the cat.

can anyone confirm the engine going into limp mode after the check engine light comes on? How do you reset it? Mine came on about 4 months ago but it went away quickly, it ended up being ATTS related. Will this still put it in "limp mode" if it even does that?

Don't get caught with a straight pipe in California period. You'll get a little more then a ticket.....Should I say don't drop the soap...

It's even illegal to change out the OEM Cat. on OBDII in California unless it quit working. I don't konow how you'd get caught though as I've never seen the Smog Check guys look under the car.
We do have nice weather though!
