Default is this safe? Downpipe questions...

hey guys, i just finished the rest of my turbo setup tonite (wahoo!) but i have a few questoins.

first off, my friend who lives 2 miles from me has the welder and i left my 2.5" pipe and 2.25" pipe (ubends) over there for when we made the intercooler piping.

Now I have to drive over there to finish the last IC pipe and the downpipe...Ive heard its bad to drive without a downpipe (open turbo exhaust) so i am curious if this is any better...this is the stock 02 housing from whatever car this 60trim t3 came off of... It points towards the block, and im just curious what will happen if i drive on this for a few minutes...or if im ok to drive on it for a few days... lemme know what you think

The noise and vibrations will be unbearable.
That DP looks a bit short to me.
I am not sure what will happen should you suck in cold air....not even sure if it will happen. Plus, you will cook your block and oil with the heat your DP is gonna put on it.

I would suggest not running it.

think it will be enough to slowly (under 2000rpm) creep over to my friends? or should i find a way to tow it there?

I ran a downpipe that turned down, and ended when it got to the oil pan... while EXTREMELY loud, it didn't really do any damage...

If you must drive it, I would limp it the whole way, get it where it needs to be and leave it.

You said you have not finished your ic piping? I hope you are not going to run with the turbo on the car unless you take the waste gate spring out. You do not want to over spin the turbo.

BTW, I would not drive it like that. It would not take long to put a header on there, then swap the turbo mani back on when you get to your friends house.

i have one last bend to make...and hes got the cutter and welder, so i cant really do anything...

what would happen if the turbo was on...but no ic piping..no harm right -- isnt it just like when you blow a charge pipe off? enlighten me a little more...

Looks like a Tbird turbo, too big of an exhaust side to be a Merkur, is that thing not water cooled?

ummm.... With your ic piping off, no boost will build, the waste gate will not see any boost and therefore not open, which leaves the turbo to spin to infinity and beyond until it gets transported to another dimension. (the 'back to the junk yard' dimension).

In short, yes, HARM. Do not do it, you will damage the turbo. I suppose you could try for light throttle driving etc. but I wouldn't, esp. since you also have that down-pipe issue.

it is water cooled as well as oil cooled...but i was told by a friend that i could just runthe oil portion and be ok.

thanks for the input slash--i suppose i can rig up some type of temporary last charge pipe piece...

i thought about having the first piece of the downpipe made b/c i dont konw how much of a bend ill need... anyway.. any other ideas?

i might just tow it over there

Get some radiator hose or something similar and ghetto rig the charge piping, and have the down-pipe made to point straight down, you could always add the rest later when you get to his house.

Good luck.

Just out of curiosity, what are you using for management?

If you set it up like I stated above and you have management you can boost a bit, though I wouldn't trust that radiator hose to hold much pressure. (although I pulled a turbo and ic off a probe once, and half of its charge piping seemed to be radiator hose or something similar)

im gonna try and use some of the stock pieces...and just get it enough to hold to get over to my friends ...still i guess ill practically idle it over there.

i'll be using the boost code (uberchip) and then attempt to tuen through an innovate wideband...my bro and i pitched in not too long ago...

and as always, thanks for your help...im so closei cant wait!

My biggest concern would be melting something in the engine bay. If the exahust doesn't point at anything that could be damaged right away, I'd go ahead and limp it to your friends. I've driven the GSR open DP and with no IC pipes for a few miles to an exahust shop to get my exahust welded on and some pipes made, as long as you're SUPER easy on the throttle (It took me like 25-30 second to do 40 in 5th) you'll be fine.

How do you like the WB. I have the same one and love it. BTW, you know about the new uberdata site and forum right?

Post up when you done.
