Default fuel pump

sometimes when i try to start my car it will crank but not start and when i just turn the key to the on position the fuel pump isn't coming on and the check engine light does. after i sit there for about 30 seconds the fuel pump will turn on and the check engine light will go off and it will start. and sometimes like today i was washin the car at a friends and it wouldn't start at all...the check engine light stayed on. i replaced the main relay and it still does it. sometimes it will start right up and sometimes the light will stay on and it won't start. any ideas??
