Default 96-98 Civic install: Metra 1720T or just get two wiring harnesses?

Bought an aftermarket stereo for my 1998 Civic EX. I know people have used the Metra 1720T kit to install the deck so they can use the keyless entry. However, I've been told you can just buy two wiring harnesses and that'll do the trick, too. I called Best Buy to see if they sold the Metra 1720T and they don't stock them; the installer said they just use two wiring harnesses.

Is one way better than the other?

Also, because I'm putting the aftermarket deck where the OEM CD player is (behind the dumb cupolders), do I have to buy any sort of mounting kit, or will it bolt in?

Well, I went to Circuit City and bought the 1720T and another harness that the installer said I'd need (or else I'd have to splice and connect some other wires). I believe it's a revers adapter or something.

Will I actually need this, or with the 1720T work by itself?

If you are leaving your stock stereo in the original location then I wouldn't even bother buying the wire harness. Just cut the speaker leads about 2 inches away from the stock radio, incase you want to reconnect it, and tie into the factory power wires. If you decide to go with the 1720T then that would be the only harness you would need, you may not have enough length on the wire for this application though.

Hmmm... thanks for your help

So the 1720 might not be long enough? Anyone else know anything about this?

check your other thread
use a metra harnass 70-1720t this will allow the factory radio to stay plugged in and keep your keyless and dome light working

then with a little patience and work you can extend the wires down to the pocket above the cupholders, remove the cd player and put your new radio in it's place...
