I assume you are looking for someone who has actually *had* this setup..you may have better luck in the AX/RR forum, but Ill try and lend a hand

I had 215/45/16 on my R(lowered on GC's and Koni's), and I had slight rubbing issues @full lock, I would assume you will have some rubbing issues as well.

You can use this to get an *approximation* of the tire sizes (225/40 vs 225/45)
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

a good place to start might be taking measurments of you current tire @ full lock both directions, and then measurments of the clearance btwn the fender and any other obstructions.

Then, taking into account the clearance available see if the desired tire will fit w/in the available clearance.
There is a good article on tire rack somewhere as well that tells you how to figure out clearance using wheel spacing/width/ride height etc..

....Im still looking for it, when I find it Ill post it up for ya.

G'luck-I hope someone else will chime in as well.

PS: what width are your RG's? 7" I assume?

It depends on the offset of the rim.

I've been using Pirelli P7000Z 225/40-16s on 50mm offset Mf-10s for 3 years now - no rubbing (even with the car lowered).

I've even used these tires at the track (when I'm not using my 15" R compounds). They perform well for street tires. The short sidewall doesn't give you much rim protection - so it's best to stay off the kerbs.

For +43 and lower offset - 215/45 are recommended (JDM size) - unless you want to roll the fender lips.

I have a set of Pirelli PZero Competition R compounds at home in 225/45 size and they look too damned big (wide) to fit on the car - they should almost go on an 8" rim IMO. But every tire is different....

So, with 16x7" +45 rims I might get by using 225/45 without rolling fenderlips?

Have had a set of 195/60/15 tires on 15x6 +38 rims on my R (stock suspension) and that worked fine without any issues with rubbing or anything. Those have a larger dia. than a set of 225/45 would have and even with the +38 offset I could get a finger between the fender lip and the tire sidewall.

Reason I'm asking is I have been thinking of the various tire size that fits my rims and car as I'm in need of new tires and have been wondering about what to go for.
Last year I had 205/45/16 and they were a bit small, so I considered getting 205/50 or maybe 225/45. Sadly it's not easy to get tires in 215/45 here, Michelin Pilot sport is an option but sadly it's $$$$$.

I would love to see someone try these on their R in a 225/45/16. Those tires are huge! I think they'd bulge out over a 7" rim even.

Kind of small - why do you want to run this size? Proper aspect ratio for 215 section width is 45.

well, from some of the specs on tirerack, the 215/45 has a slighty bigger overall diameter (depending on tire), where as the 215/40 would have a slightly smaller overall diameter. skinny tires don't bother me that much. i drove on 215/35/18 for a year and never damaged the tires, although i did drive more carefull in the city with them.

Even better. Let me know if you have any rubbing issues because I was thinking about stepping up to that size of a rim and tire.

Yes keep us updated, luckily for me I get my tires from a friend so I'm sure I can try a few different tire sizes on to check for fitment issues when the time comes to do tireshopping. But if you find that 225/45/16 will not fit than I'll save some time and effort.
