You know about gear ratios right? Well, a JDM final drive is a HIGHER final drive gear that comes out of a JDM ITR and CTR. The final drive is higher then the stock final drive gear of the USDM ITR or Si.

The gears are lower rather. The ITR is 4.785. But the CTR is 4.400 along with the GSR, Del Sol VTEC, and 99+ Si.

..in general..
A final drive is the final set of gears...or gear.. that the transmission has to communicate through in order to put power out to the axles/wheels.
Every car has a final drive.....
When the spec or ratio of the final drive is changed - whether higher or lower geared, it has a dramatic effect on acceleration.

now...
a "JDM final drive" can mean many things.....You need to be more specific.
But, I bet you're wondering about the JDM 4.785 final drive, which is only found on the JDM 98.spec ITR. The 4.785 FD (final drive) is one tight ratio....which will make the 1-5 gears shorter as a whole. Any B-series DOHC VTEC hydro tranny(US & JDM), other than a JDM 98.spec R have a 4.40 FD. The 4.785 is more 'race' oriented, hence the "R" in Type-R. Acceleration is incredibly increased and is totally noticeable-also adding some 15% more torque to the powerband with a 4.785 or any other aftermarket FD available on the JDM market. However, the 4.40 FD is more of a streetable FD - I'm not saying that the 4.7 is BAD, but....a lot of people on the net, W H I N E about how high they're 5th gear is and how they can't stand the high revs on the freeway - boo fawkin' hoo you retards!! - you shoulda known what you were getting into when buying a 4.7 FD!

hope this helps...
I think I might have left out some information, due to my hunger crisis of not eating lunch yet....grey matter is being lost.
