how reliable is it to boost a stock d16a6? and how much more reliable will it be boosting a LS compared to a d16a6?

Deponds on what kind of condition the motor is in. And how the ownere takes care of things.

reliability is inversly porportional to the amount of boost you run. Assuming its properly tuned. That is long term lifespan. High boost requires high level of mods and the resulting high cost to keep everything reliable. But from everything I have heard, it can ber very reliable assuming you do it right.

Honda Tuning recently did a budget boost on a CRX with a D16A6...HF manifold,T25 turbo,etc...they recommended about 6 psi of boost. They recently built it up more and made 211 HP at the wheels.I wouldnt go over that unless you have some forged rods,I dont think the stock D16 rods could take much more than that anyway.

Im boosted d16a6 w/ 170k miles. It has been good to me so far, im at 5 lbs unintercooled. just make sure you have the right octane, spark plugs, retarded timing, etc.

depends on tuning. In a way it also depends on how you have your setup. Reliability depends on how well your setup was done. A week after i got my turbo on I had 3 oil feed lines burst on me, because of how they were setup (slightly too close to manifold). Some people have all sorts of problems, everything ranging from small oil leaks, to coolant leaks. Hell my downpipe caught on fire from oil spilling on it. Then theres people who never have a problem that isnt a quick fix. There are so many variables to count. Get a nice turbo setup and proper tuning and there is no reason why it should be any less reliable. Do expect to run into occasional turbo farts tho, for some reason when you go turbo, you tend to have the dumbest problems.

yeah keep it around 6 or 7 .. I'm on my 4th motor.. i learned the hard way .. hehe. was running fine with 5 pounds then boosted to 10... pulls like crazy but internals won't take it!! rings and piston.... I blew my 3 motors running 10 pounds... (D16z6) now i learned my lesson and got a fully built one!! and i'm still running 5 pounds till i brake it in.. motor has 0 miles.. Keep at 6

From what I've seen with my own eyes, if you tune he car correctly and dont step on it all the time only when necessary you can run it at 10psi on the stock internals. BUT REMEMBER it take some kind of tuning for it to run safely. For example higher feul pump, larger injectors, not too big though, and good fmu. I've seen a stock d16 block with this setup and he's doing 13s at the track. I would also recomend like a block gaurd of some type just to be on the safe side. I'm actually going with the same setup so let us know how it turns out if you do it

to boosted d16's
I am building up my own kit right now, i'll probably start out like around 6 lbs daily and keep that for a while until i get used to everything...then hoping to be able to switch to 10 lbs when racing but i might look into a block guard. Do your research and you will be fine

Saw a 160K mile D16Z6 with thick head gasket make 302Whp..

tuning = reliability

#1 get everything you want motor wise for the car.
#2 deside how much power you want and boost.
#3 take it to the dyno and don't change anything part wise or tuning wise...

Remember everytime you change something you have to go back to the dyno.

My signature says it all

99,000 boosted miles.

16,500 boosted on the Y8
82,300 boosted on the old A6 (Installed the Supercharger w/195,000 on the A6)

Think I got my moneys worth yet?

20 years later I'm here to say my stock d series has gotten the brakes beaten off it on 11psi tuned on HTS with minimal mods for 2 years now. Tuning and maintenance are your best friends. Tons of fun.
