Over Reved engine qusetion....
I just got off the phone with the dealership and they said that I do not need a compression test and if there was anything wrong internally (bent valve) with the car the "CEL" would pop up.
Have any of you over reved your engine and if so did you throw a CEL???
Will a compression test rule out any internal damgages bent valves ect...
Any info on this topic will be helpful.

Well, I'm pretty sure I have 1 or more bent valves, but no CEL yet. I have a rapping noise and an erratic idle, but it hasn't thrown any codes yet. I'm swapping out my GSR motor tho, it was pretty tired (190k) and I don't need the down time of rebuilding. Swap is going in tomorrow if everything goes as planned

A compression test will help determine if you have a bent valve. A cylinder leakdown test will tell you for sure.
You won't neccessarily get a cel from a bent valve.

So I guess i can't get a compression test done for free at the dealership
because they said that they need a CEL to do any work.
Or..... there is some other way to get this test done for free through the dealership

Run a comrpession check yourself. If you are hitting low 200s or high 190s in the cylinder you have problems.

If it's under warranty, tell them to check it out. I used to do this all the time (no CEL, just a strange noise or smell), and they never charged me a dime. If they want to charge you, then they obviously don't have very good customer service. You can get a compression tester for cheap at AutoZone or another parts store; it would most likely be cheaper than what a dealership would charge to do the test.
The CEL is pretty much worthless, because it only comes on for stupid crap... it tends to be either some random glitch, or a problem that you're already well aware of. I once blew my engine (oil pump and bearing problems, not sure which happened first) and the CEL never came on. The only time it seems to help is if you forget to plug a sensor in, or it's wires get broken.

I've done this 2 times...missing 4th and hitting 2nd...
I have an LS, redline is like 6900, and I went probably to about 9000-9200 rpms when I mis shifted. it started tapping, both time I've done it, I pop off the valve cover, readjusted the valve lash and it was fine. I could see clearly which one loosened up, but no bent valves yet.
