Default Overheating and the Heater quit not work

I was idleing one day in the cold weather. Heater "was" working fine then all the sudden it kinda fadded away and got cold. I was like wtf and drove it home. Before I even got home the temp gauge was getting really hot near the red so I pulled over let it cool down and then drove the rest of the way home. and the heat still did not work during the overheating, just cold air. Sounds like a water pump to me since the heat did not work. Can anyone please help me with this?? Thanks It's an 89 CRX HF 5-speed

I replaced the Thermostat a couple weeks ago so it's new. Even if the head gasket was blown the heat should still work because the water is still flowing threw the head/heater core correct??

if it overheats when you get on the gas then it's a headgasket, and they only cost $23 at your local autozone
