Default Driving a Manual Transmission..(our ITRs of course)

When you slow down to a full stop, do you downshifted through a couple of gears? (instead of just hitting the brake)
I got used to doing that (with a little rev matching of course)... but will this be bad to the engine?
how about the synchro or transmission?

For a couple times, I tried putting the gear to neutral and just hitting the brake (when approaching a red light) but then I just feel that it is not right.. or I feel as if the car just go without anything holding it... Probably just my feeling, but well.... any thoughts? comments?

I personally put the baby in neutral then just coast. I've never heard of this being detrimental...

I would think by downshifting through the gears you'd cause unnecessary stress on the clutch/tranny...unless of course you're racing on the track

If you know you're going to have to stop ahead then there's nothing wrong w/ throwing it into neutral and braking.

several other people on here have had the same dilemma... Downshifting when stopping (even if you rev match) does put at least a little wear on your clutch.

Which costs more to replace, clutch or brake pads? clutch by a long shot.

I know what you mean though, it does kinda feel like you don't have as much control... Just have to get used to it.

I rev match and down shift ALWAYS! Its just too much fun. Anyways, parts are going to wear out eventually.

I'll do either depending on my mood. Lately though, I've been double-clutching and rev matching for practice..

Just do whatever you want. Clutches last a long time unless you're a bitch to them. I do either way, depends on the stop, just don't downshift into first because it doesn't seem to be too nice to the tranny.

I don't know what i do... i'm still learning how to drive a manual.

I think i just apply the brakes, clutch pedal down, down shift till i get to first gear, release clutch for better braking power and press onto the clutch pedal again when before it stops. I hope theirs nothing wrong with doing that..

Oh, and i don't know what you call it but i also downshift and release the clutch pedal gently to slow down the car when i can... hope thats okay too.

I always rev match downshift when stopping. No real reason to just fun and good practice. As long as you match rpms well it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

It all depends on my mood. If I'm really lazy that day, I'll just put it in neutral and if I'm not, I downshift. It all just depends I guess

Hey lordastro... not sure if you want to be doing that too much... releasing the clutch slowly to slow the car down that is... Kind of stresses the clutch... If you heel and toe or at least rev match than your clutch will stay cooler and happier

Me I heel and toe cause it sound so cool when you are going into a corner or stopping in traffic around a bunch of people looking at your car ( prolly cause you smoked em up at the last light .. LOL )

Sides... if I ever get the nerve to put my money where my mouth is and compete at some level in the car.. at least i'll have practiced one thing...

Have I mentioned before how much I dig this car????

I rev match/downshift through the gears down to second, then put the clutch in when the revs get down to about 1500.

There's no reason to downshift when you know you are coming to a complete stop. I leave it in gear, no downshift, brake, then go to neutral just before I come to a stop. This keeps the tranny spinning and lubrication flowing.

...then put the clutch in when the revs get down to about 1500.
Sounds about right.

VERY, VERY, BAD for the clutch! DO NOT DO THIS.
