noo your car is not starting maybe cause u battery or something killing your battery. VSS is nothing it won't hurt your car or anything but if your car has vtec it won't go in vtec if throwing VSS. I sugguest you try and find the helms book somewhere online and check out the VSS cable going in the tranny. I don't have a picture

I had a VSS before It was the screw at the back of the cluster wasn't tight.
so I changed the cluster the problem went away. Its something to do with the ecu not getting the signal or something but doesn't hurt the car unless you have a swap no vtec if you get code 17.

Get up under your tranny, just above your driver side axle there should be a fat wire running into the tranny from above, it may or may not have a boot over it as well. If you trace this wire back it will go into your firewall, this is your speedo cable. Tug up on it to make sure its still connected to the tranny. If it pops out youll need to put it back in and probably replace the clip that holds it in. Honda has them for a couple cents I believe.
If all that checks out ok take the panel off the back of your gauge cluster and check the other end of the cable running to the speedo. It just snaps on so that wont be hard. Good luck.

Here is the troubleshooting flowchart for code 17:

My car had this problem a while back..If your speedometer still works,
the problem is probably in the speed instrument cluster itself.
When my car was stock,I just removed the "check engine" bulb
and drove the hell out of it..it ran fine..
