Default BMW style fade in/fade out interior light.

Is there any way to make the interior light(the one on the headliner) fade in when you open the door, and fade out when you close it? I noticed my brother's bmw m3 did this. I want to do this to my 92 civic hatch, but it should be the same for most cars. Anyone have any ideas?

I think it is done with a capacitor.

My wrx does this. When I close the door, the brightness immediately drops in half it seems. Then it fades from there.

My brother in law had this on his Integra. It was connected to his alarm, so when it was disarmed, the light would come on. When you arm it, it would stay on for a little bit then gradually fade.

Not really sure how it's done, but it's definitely do-able. Maybe you could check with an alarm shop. They would probably know how to do this.
