Default Are Skunk2 stage 1 cams really an upgrade over '01 ITR cams?

I'd like to know this from people who's got experience with them. Is it really worthin the purchase of these cams or you can achieve the same result with the stock cams with a little tuning?

Good comments welcome

from what i have read by putting around, they are an upgrade but how much of one i dont know. Im buying a set of new skunk2 stage 1's for my R right after x-mas for 500, and i know on stage 1's with other things(compression, header, p&p), can reach over 200 whp, but im not sure if stock cams can reach 200 whp...im really interested in what everyone has to say

The 01 itr cams are great but the Skunk2 stg1's will make more power. I did lose some midrange but made more power over all. Plus they work with stock valvetrain. My friend did the same upgrade and made about 10 hp more than itr cams. I got around 12hp more.

Sorry, I only have my dyno plot before the skunk stg1 cams as the place I dynoed at after went out of business and lost my plot. In general, the cams made 12 hp more at peak and a range of 6-12 hp more from 6000 and up. Below 6K the 01 cams were superior, about 4- 10 hp more.

In general if you use the car for more for the street or for races where mid range power is important I would stick with the itr cams. I do miss the midrange but for the track driving I do, I am always in VTEC and usually well above 6K rpm all the time so the stg1's meet my requirements...

its really all in the tuning of the car. I have seen stock R cams make as much power. In fact, most of you guys make more then me with stock cams then i do with my skunk stage 1's.
Its all in the tuning.

I am planning on getting some Skunk Stage 1's first of the year. I think it will be a decent power upgrade for the money.

I've had stage one's installed for a while now. At first I dropped them in and had no fuel tuning device and only made 173whp. However at the track my car trapped its best ever of 100.89mph. My previous best with stock cams was 100.7mph in much better conditions (about the best you can get in AL). I eventually got a VAFC for fuel tuning and without touching the cam gears made 180whp with the stock exhaust. I would have went for more in depth tuning but the dyno I was at didn't deal with imports and I've never tuned a car before.

Before I was able to hit the dyno with an experienced tuner my timing belt slipped and bent some valves, it was my own fault, car had 75,000mi and was now under the stress of larger cams. I got the head reworked and hit the dyno again. The car was having major lean issues that my VAFC nor FPR could control. The stock injectors just couldn't handle it. I've now upgraded to Hondata and DSM 450's, but am currently street tuned with a FJO wideband, running stock timing maps with 14 degrees of base timing, just trying to be safe for now. I hit the track like this and trapped a best of 98.9mph. Hopefully I can get to a hondata tuner shortly to see what these things can really do.

MPH use to run stage one's before he got his EVO. He made over 200whp with 11.3 compression and a VAFC.
