Default Suggestions: affordable header / legalities

Whats up?

I have a 1992 CX with a OBD1 b18c1 swap and am looking into header, exhaust system options. I have purchased a catback exhaust: greddy sp2 (2 3/8") and am currently trying to choose a header that will match nicely and will have (significant) gains. I plan to use this as a daily driver, so reliability is a necessity.

Currently I'm running the stock oil pan / exhaust manifold with the a gsr cat with a test pipe down to the 1 3/8" stock cx piping (this is temporary of course). I'd like to add power and also solve the problem of the gap in my exhaust system that occurs bc of the length of the short gsr manifold. Also important to note, my o2 sensor is installed off the stock manifold in a bung. When I move to a header, how should I attack the issue of 02 sensor installation (ie. do headers have threading for this, or is there something else to do?).

Now, as far as headers: I don't necessarily want to spend a lot of money, but I would not be opposed to buying something that might b a little bit pricier if I were confident that I would have serious gains (I want to improve performance across the rpm band, please discourage me from specific headers that might prove to offer less performance tha usdm stock). I've been milling over DC Sports headers, Greddy, JDM CTR and ITR, while I've read quite a bit about more race oriented headers such as Header Tech, JD/Edelbrock (modified 2.5" collector)SMSP, AN-R, Comp Tech, and DTR. I don't know the legalities regarding different types of headers, but I'm assuming some of these are not "street legal."

I live in NJ and do not know if I should be concerned with this issue; I don't expect police to be checking under the hood - but I might be concerned if a header would affect the emissions. So, if this is going to be an issue with the "better" header choices, then I guess please make recommendations of headers that are street legal and reliable.

Please make recommedations for fitment (ie. what will work best matched with a 2 3/8" greddy exhaust system, maybe recommend a size/brand of bolt on hi-flow cat).

If you have or know someone who has a header I may be interested in and lives near monmouth county nj, please let me know. If you make/sell headers please tell me which you think I should buy and why.

I don't expect people to answer nearly everything that I have asked, I realize that I'm searching for quite a bit of general information, but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Please offer any recommendations regarding any of the issues that I have presented.

Thanks
Jake

All the aftermarket headers you mentioned come, or have the option of coming with, the 02 bung in the exhaust manifold. If you ever need an extra bung, they are super cheap to have welded in at any exhaust shop.

I think it's most decided that the JDM DC Sports 4-1 header is the best bang for your buck. I've heard great things about the AN-R header, but I haven't seen a back to back comparison of the JDM DC and AN-R to justify the extra $200 (AN-R being the next cheapest option up from the JDM DC). Since you don't want to spend a lot, I would count out the other headers you've mentioned. None of them will be street legal.

When it comes down to it, you really can't beat the JDM DC for the value. I picked mine up for $300 new at a Retail shop that's local. I make really good power all things considered on my setup with it. The only mentionable drawback of this header would be ground clearance. It does hang pretty low. Mine's pretty mashed in from hitting stuff, but I haven't noticed a noticeable margin of power loss, and still dyno'd decent with the banged up header.

Your concern with exhaust fitment. If you need any alterations, a competant exhaust shop can fix length/size problems for a reasonalbe price. Hope this helps.

jg edelbrock ...you can get any muffler shop to mod the collector for you. that way they can line it up with the exhaust/cat too. that header has a carb number on it, so if you get your hood popped by the cops, you can show them that number if they sweat u about the header.

Now with the modification the JG, can it be modified to have a flange to attach to the cat; i'm hoping not to have to weld anything; unless there are cats that you can weld on the manifold side and bolt up to the cat back system on the exhaust side.
