Default B18 a good motor to learn basics on?

Guys, I want to learn how to rebuild motors, esp honda motor because I have a GSR now. My question is, would it be hard to self teach/ use the haynes manual to learn and actually rebuild a B18? I am looking for a good project this summer, and I am thinking of find a B18 block and ripping it apart, and building it up real ncie as funds permit. Let me know what you guys think.

I think you could totally do it!!! I did my own auto to manual conversion and I've worked on other engines before; IMO I think the difficulty of doing your own engine work is overrated. As long as you got a clean garage so you can keep EVERYTHING organized, you should be fine. You'll want to rent a engine hoist and stand too. And for the serious stuff, take it to a good shop (ex. head work, port n' polish, piston sleves or boring, etc.) And because of the money you'll save on labor you can spend a little more on tools, better professional labor, or higher performace parts !!!! Good luck, hope I helped!!

I didn't say I was gonna do a B18a/b, I want to do a B18c, but here are my mine set backs, No Garage!! The tools I could get, but I would have to do it in my room UPSTAIRS at my lake house. It would have plenty of room, but I don't wanna lug engine parts up and down stairs all day. From what I hear, it is easy, and I should do it. The engine i would build with either be a beast to handle boost, or an all motor set-up. I think I wanna do the all motor one first, sounds like it will be cheaper. Now the question is, used honda block or dart block. I am in college, so budget is limited!

Ouch! Upstairs? If you can get the block upstairs an on a stand you should be good to go.. I think the only way to truly learn is doing so a BIG goes out to you..

I am sure I could get it up there, but wouldn't it be a bitch getting it back down there! I am gonna search for some place to do it, maybe buy a small 10X10 storage shed for my lake house and do it in that, I am open to any suggestions about the whole where to do it thing. Now i gotta find a Block!

Oh ure good 91tegrals, I just want a project, damn limited budget! (how many of you have ever said that?) I was reading an article in Turbo magazine about them building up and Sr20de, and man have they got it figured out, specila block modifications, Swain Tech coating, H beam rods made of 4340 chrome-moly, i got a friggin stiffy just reading the article. Its a great read if anyone gets the mag, It is great the research, planning, and prep they are doing. And their goal is only 400HP. I say only because I know Sr's are capable of alot more. If anyone ever feels like chatting just about motors or cars in general, drop me an IM on AIM, Crackaballer, I am always willing to talk and learn more. Later guys, looks like I have found a summer project! (Lord willing, and wallet able)
