Default JDM 98 Spec Tranny Noises.

Hi,

My 98 Spec JDM ITR tranny is making a humming noise ('moaning') all the time.

This has been so from when it has been imported from japan, it has around 125k on the odo.

Here in Malta we cannot go and buy the parts over the counter, there is only one dealer and it takes 3-4 weeks for the pre ordered parts to arrive.

I am suspecting the input shaft bearing and i was going to order that part before opening up the tranny ....but i have searched and it seems it could be:

Countershaft missing teeth,
LSD Bearings,
etc............

I know one could order every bearing and do a complete rebuild but i am on a budget right now and would like to repair the tranny now and forget that humming noise cause its driving me crazy !!

Can someone please try to help me to identify what needs to be replaced by my description of what's happening?

Basically my tranny whines and hums all the time and the noise increases when i am in higher rpms.

Help me please guys !

rgds,

Thanks for the quick reply itrchris .....

the problem is that i don't want to order the input shaft bearing and open up the tranny to find for eg. the lsd bearing which are shot....that would mean 3-4 weeks with no car and the tranny opened up awaiting for the parts to arrive.

anyone else please?

There have been several posts on Input shaft bearings. Do a search, that's how I determined mine failed. Here's how to identify a failing input shaft bearing:

Car stopped, engine on, transmission in neutral, clutch not depressed and you get the moaning sound, you've likely got a defective input shaft bearing. Same conditions with clutch depressed, you've got a failing throw-out bearing.

LSD would only make noise when the wheels are turning, so you shouldn't have any noise until your moving.

Yes it does.............

bet the best thing to do is to order the input shaft bearing, and hope that the humming will go away by replacing it...............

hoping i won't find nightmares when we open it up.........

Order the input shaft seal at the same time.

If you open it up and you see that your going to need more parts then you thought, You can allways call Len have have him overnight a few parts to get you back on the road.

As for the inputshaft bearing do a search under my name I had a big mess.

I already know what the problem is

its the input shaft bearing...but change both bearings
the clutch housing side is probably shot
so now the one on the gear housing side is taking more load.. is probably out of spec

change both bearings on the input shaft

I did this to mine...works great

number 16 bearing
you should also replace number 21 seal at the same time

I also reccomend you change number 17 bearing
It will also be out of spec

Any parts you want shipped from the US, I highly recommend the shipper use Express Mail Service (EMS) thru the post office rather than FedEx.

I've had all the bearings replaced in my tranny and mine still makes the same noise. I've even gotten the whole mainshaft assembly replaced and that didn't fix it either. I called Acura Care and one of their reps will be at my local on Dec 23rd to get a first-hand account of what's going on.

And don't forget that the bearings might have spun in the case and the case could be damaged
