I currently use 10-40wt. Redline synthetic oil in my ITR. If anyone is using the 20-50wt. what are your impressions? For example is the 20wt too heavy to adequately protect the valve train during a cold start? Can you notice any more power from the heavier oil film?

 

Please do not use 20w 50 thats hella thick.

 

I use Castrol RS 10-60.. It's the best iv'e tried yet..

 

Why would heavier oil give you more power????

the only time I used 20-50 wt oil was in the desert in the summer months. since it was 115-120 degree in the shade. any other places I wouldn't recommend since 5-30 wt is the widest range recommend by honda.

 

I've had a lot of success with the Mobil 1 0w40 synthetic. But my car sees drastic temperature changes regularly (FL to NC and back). I highly recommend it though.

And you should gain power from a better lubricating oil, not thicker oil.

i'm being serious. i have had absolutely no problems with it all, i am hard as hell on my tranny and i have no grinds, no problems. one of my buddies has ran it in his car for years and he was the one that told me to use it

I wouldnt use 5w-30 unless I was driving around in alaska with below freezing weather.Honda also recommends changing your oil every 7500 miles...lol.

I use 10w-30 in temps below 40,15w-40 in temps between 40-80 and 20w-50 in 80+

 

I use Quaker State Synthetic 20w-50 in my car, i like it alot. my car burns up 10-30 like water, had to change it after every 2-3 runs. i can get at least 8 runs out of 20-50, hehe

 

My ITR also burns a fair amount of oil when I use 5w-30w oil. It uses only a small amount when using 10w-40w.

tidbit of info for people who may not know how to read oil viscositys.

first number = cold \ startup weight

second number = warm weight

ie = 5w30, 5 weight when you start the car when cold, then when the engine warms up, the viscosity changes to 30 weight,

thought some of you would find that interesting. and if you dont believe me, ask my automotive teacher!

20-50 is like sludge. all my vw friends use it and make fun of me for 5-30 saying it dont work. go with what honda reccommends, after all they did make the car

volkswagon. it reccommended for volkswagons, but i wouldnt let 20-50 near my honda

 

I was just being a little sarcastic, about the vw slam.
I like to use whatever oil the Factory reccomends, (or whatever the engine builder I deal with tells me).

the "W" in the first number has nothing to do with the oils weight. the "W" means winter. you have to pass a the cold cranking viscosity test in order to be assigned a 0w, 5w, or 10w.

0W cold cranking vis. must be better than 6200cp@-35C
5W cold cranking vis. must be better than 6600@-30C

and if 5w was an indication of the oils actual viscosity when cold, then that would mean that oil thickens up as it gets hotter, when in reality oil get thinner as the temperature increases. a 30weight oil is only a 30wt. at 210F and as the oil temperature rises it becomes even thinner.

the only car i ever used 20-50 was in my 84 RX-7. The rotors were specially equipped with aftermarket apex seals and all this happy horseshit that i built into it. very tempermental engine! even during summer it ran best with 20-50.

 

I use to use only 5w-30 oil until i saw the oil reccomendations for my engine in japan and europe. Other countries are allowed to use 40 weights, 50 weights, even straight weights. Makes you wonder why N. America is only allowed to use 5w-30.
